Gyeongseong Creature K-Drama 2023 Episode 10 with Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee

Jan 7, 2024

Gyeongseong Creature Episode 10 begins with a narration from Chae-ok, describing how she dreamt of an ordinary life with the people she loves. Maeda pulls her out of her musings and chides her dreams. She then reveals she knew Chae-ok’s mother.

At the pawnshop, Beom-o makes his confession. Maeda asked him for information on Chae-ok and promised Tae-sang’s safety in return. Before leaving the pawnshop, Tae-sang leaves the shop’s keys with Mrs. Nawol and tells her to sell the place if he doesn’t make it back. Jun-taek’s colleagues hand Tae-sang the bombs and he goes on his way.

Chae-ok is taken to Kato in the hospital. On the floor below this one, Seishin paces angrily. When Kato slaps Chae-ok, Seishin bursts through the mesh floor.

Outside, a rickshaw driver approaches the hospital gates, leaves the rickshaw there and runs away. A bomb explodes and knocks the soldiers out, giving Tae-sang an opening to enter the hospital.

Kato holds Chae-ok at gunpoint in order to stop Seishin’s rampage on his soldiers. He orders them to shoot her when she stops moving.

While packing to leave for Tokyo, Sachimoto learns that Seishin’s husband is in the hospital. Joong-won is in fact moving through the vents when he comes across Tae-sang, who is setting up the explosives. Tae-sang updates him about Chae-ok and gives him tickets to a ship headed to Shanghai, for Joong-won and Chae-ok to escape.

Kato is running away with Chae-ok in tow. When Seishin catches up to them, soldiers blast her with nitrogen. Joong-won and Tae-sang hear another soldier talk about the situation. Joong-won then gives Tae-sang the tickets to Shanghai and says he will set up the bombs instead, after all, he wants to be one to be with his wife till the end. They go their separate ways.

What happens to Onseong Hospital?

Kato and his soldiers decide to shut the underground lab and leave in ten minutes. As a group of soldiers drag Chae-ok upstairs, Tae-sang arrives to free her. Meanwhile, Kato packs up the vials and anthrax bottles and runs off. He stops in his tracks when he comes across Myeong-ja, who seems to be experiencing labour pains.

Having set the bombs alight, Joong-won begins to sing a song. The sound lures Seishin and she sees the necklace Joong-won left hanging under a light. He tells her to leave with him and at that moment, the explosives all go off.  Chae-ok wants to go downstairs to get her parents but Tae-sang tells her about her father’s last request.

The soldiers at the hospital struggle to put the fire out. In the mess, we are shown traces of blood that reveal Seishin is still alive and made it to the hospital’s roof.

Sachimoto comes across Chae-ok and Tae-sang and guides them to an escape route. Before they leave, Sachimoto apologises to Chae-ok for his involvement in everything. Tae-sang and Chae-ok then get in an army truck and leave the premises amidst the chaos. Seishin seems to watch them go from the roof of the hospital.

Do Tae-sang and Chae-ok escape?

Nawol and the others get a message from Tae-sang and are relieved to know he’s okay. Mrs. Nawol puts together a bunch of valuables into a suitcase. Beom-o says he can deliver it unnoticed and asks them to trust him. Unfortunately, someone is watching Beom-o as he rides away.

Tae-sang tells Chae-ok they need to go to Incheon where their ship awaits. But Chae-ok says she should go alone since she’s the one wanted for murder. Of course, Tae-sang refuses and says he will protect her no matter what.

A policeman sees Seishin moving through the streets of the city. Meanwhile, Beom-o makes it to Tae-sang and Chae-ok, handing them the suitcase. But several cars soon arrive after him and masked men exit them, led by Lady Maeda. When Tae-sang steadfastly stands by Chae-ok, Maeda says she’s sad to be losing a friend. She also says that Seishin made her lose a friend as well all those years ago. Maeda leaves and the men launch their attack.

The fight rages on but our main leads seem to be losing. Of course, Seishin comes to the rescue and kills all the other men. Unfortunately, Seishin also thinks Tae-sang is one of the bad guys and attacks him. Chae-ok shields him and one of Seishin’s tentacles goes through her instead. In tears, she tells her mother that they should stop now and that Tae-sang is the man she loves. But the damage is done and Chae-ok bleeds out in Tae-sang’s arms.

What happens to Lady Maeda?

At the broken-down hospital, a soldier searches for Kato. He finds him in the prison cell with Myeong-ja, where Kato has delivered her baby and is holding it.

At Ishikawa’s funeral ceremony, Jun-taek gives Maeda an envelope sent by Tae-sang. It has one word on it — farewell. She turns around to see a bunch of flower bouquets, sent in the names of all the key players of the show. From Tae-sang and Chae-ok to Joong-won and Yeong-gwan. Turns out, there are also explosives hidden around the place. Maeda realises but it’s too late, she isn’t able to leave fast enough.

How does Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 end?

At the Moonlight Bar, Tae-sang and Jun-taek have a drink. Jun-taek and the others congratulate him for being a patriot and a hero, but Tae-sang still refuses to don the title of a rebel. He remains Master Jang Tae-sang of the House of Golden Treasures. A flashback shows that Jun-taek told Tae-sang he ratted them out when he was being held captive, but Tae-sang let it go.

Tae-sang heads back to the pawnshop. Before going in, he seems to spot something on the street and sits on the step outside. As he thinks about Chae-ok, his eyes tear up.

Elsewhere, Kato visits Lady Maeda, who is alive but in a wheelchair. Half of her face is covered with burns. Kato asks if she will stay here or return to Kyoto, but she doesn’t respond. Kato puts a glass of water in front of Maeda and leaves. It’s unclear if the water has one of the Najin or not.

The scene shifts to an underwater location where Seishin and Chae-ok float together. In order to save her child, Seishin lets go of the Najin, which exits her body and enters Chae-ok’s body instead. As Seishin floats down, Chae-ok’s eyes open.

The scene shifts once more, this time showing clips from Korea’s history. It zooms out to a television in an apartment in modern Seoul, where a man looks out the window. Someone calls him Ho-jae and as he turns we see that he looks just like Tae-sang at the end of Gyeongseong Creature Episode 10.

The Episode Review

That ending was unexpected. Gyeongseong Creature Episode 10 is a thrilling ride from start to finish. It’s a pleasure to watch the hospital blow up and end up in pieces. The patriotic theme of the show shines, Joong-won’s sacrifice is moving and Chae-ok’s death is absolutely gut-wrenching.

After all they’ve been through, it’s hard to see happiness snatched away from Chae-ok and Tae-sang. But the writing is well executed and Tae-sang’s revenge with the flowers and the bombs at Ishikawa’s funeral is a masterpiece. The slow dawning of realisation on Maeda’s face is truly satisfying.

Things are perfect right until Tae-sang returns to his pawnshop but after that, the ending goes a different direction. The show undoes not just one but two deaths as we find that Chae-ok is saved by her mother and Maeda survived the bomb. The latter is a particular disappointment since the explosion was executed so well.

Kato continuing his schemes was expected but what really twists the tale is the time jump at the end. And a man named Ho-jae who looks exactly like Tae-sang. Who is this? Is he a descendant of Tae-sang? More importantly, will Season 2 be set during modern times? How would Chae-ok fit in then? Overall, I do think this drama had a perfect ending for the season and these loose ends dampen the impact, even if it does leave space open for taking the story forward.
