tvN’s new historical drama starring 2PM’s Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon has given viewers a closer look at the cast’s first script reading!
tvN’s “Royal Secret Inspector Joy” is a historical comedy investigation drama about a young gourmand named Ra Yi Eon (Taecyeon), who becomes a secret royal inspector against his will, and a divorced woman named Kim Jo Yi (Kim Hye Yoon), who is searching for happiness.
The clip begins with a teaser before previewing the upbeat and exciting atmosphere of the script reading. In interviews, both Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon comment on how fun the drama is and add, “I just need to do well.”
Taecyeon introduces himself and his character Ra Yi Eon who is a secret royal inspector, but very much a klutz. The actor shares, “I think he’s the king of laziness. He doesn’t want to work, but he’s clearheaded and very talented. Once he’s appointed secret royal inspector, he tries to avoid everything while on the job.”
Kim Hye Yoon plays Kim Jo Yi, an unconventional woman of the Joseon era who strives to find her own happiness. To describe her role, Kim Hye Yoon comments, “A realist who is ahead of her time. She tries to search for at least a little bit of her own happiness,” which is shown through her pursuit of a divorce.
Regarding the chemistry between Ra Yi Eon and Kim Jo Yi, Kim Hye Yoon shares, “All we did was read but it was so fun.” Taecyeon adds, “So cute and lovely. I think [Kim Hye Yoon’s] energy gets transferred to me too. I hope we can quickly go to set and meet again as Ra Yi Eon and Jo Yi.”
Lee Jae Kyoon plays Park Tae Seo, the son of the concubine of the prime minister. His uncertain social position is an obstacle to his career ambitions. Lee Jae Kyoon shares, “Out of fear that he’ll be abandoned by his father, he’s a character who tries to create a new society.”
Bae Jong Ok appears as Deokbong, a butcher who uses all her money for social justice, such as taking care of women and children who have nowhere else to go. Jung Bo Suk plays prime minister Park Seung, who wields the true power among the noble families.
Taecyeon shares his anticipation for his bromance with Ra Yi Eon’s servants Yook Chil and Goo Pal, played by Min Jin Woong and Park Gang Sub. Park Gang Sub shares, “As Ra Yi Eon is dispatched as a secret royal inspector, [Goo Pal] offers hints and clues to help resolve investigations.” Min Jin Woong adds, “You can think of him as one of the the most normal, yet most bright, typical citizen heroes.”
Chae Won Bin plays Jo Yi’s closest friend Bo Ri who is immature and passive. Lee Sang Hee plays Kwang Soon, who works with Jo Yi to assist the secret royal inspector team. The actress comments, “[Kwang Soon] has a warm character but I think it occasionally comes off in a crude manner.”
The cast continue to work together as they create a bright environment and develop their chemistry. At the end, they all ask viewers to wait patiently for their drama, look forward to it, and give them lots of love.
