Lim Ji Yeon Talks About Leaving Her “The Glory” Character Behind + Working With Kim Tae Hee For “Lies Hidden In My Garden”

Jun 1, 2023

Lim Ji Yeon has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “Lies Hidden in My Garden”!

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, ENA’s “Lies Hidden in My Garden” is a suspenseful thriller about two women who lead entirely different lives—before a suspicious smell in one of their backyards brings them together in ways that they could never have expected.

Kim Tae Hee will star as Joo Ran, a housewife who seems to have the perfect life, with a husband and son that anyone would envy. Meanwhile, Lim Ji Yeon will play Sang Eun, a victim of domestic violence who dreams of escaping her hellish reality.

Recalling how she fell in love with the script right away, Lim Ji Yeon shared, “I was smitten after reading the original novel and the script. I think I would have agreed to appear in the drama even if it weren’t in the role of Sang Eun. The common denominator between the two women left an impression on me, and as an actress, I wanted to try living the life of those women. As I was reading the script, I became curious and intrigued about what would happen next in the story.”

Lim Ji Yeon also talked about how Sang Eun gave her the chance to step into a new role that was very different from her character in her last drama, “The Glory.”

“While reading the script, [Sang Eun] felt like a character I had really wanted to play,” she said. “Rather than thinking about the difficult aspects, I thought that it would be a new challenge for me as an actress.”

She went on, “It was a project I had already chosen before my last project [‘The Glory’] was released, but it just so happened that I wound up playing two contrasting characters back to back. Rather than wanting to erase my previous character, I feel excited that I might be able to show a new side of myself to viewers.”

As for her initial reaction to the character of Sang Eun, Lim Ji Yeon remarked, “She seems like a character that you’ve seen somewhere before in real life. I thought to myself, ‘It’d be really hard to play her.'”

In terms of her approach to the role, the actress recalled, “I thought, ‘Let’s really act as the raw Lim Ji Yeon.’ I acted while thinking of what it would be like to be a woman without any colors or emotion, to be a woman who is the epitome of emotionless emptiness. I even stood before the camera without any makeup.”

“The Sang Eun in the original novel felt a little different from the Sang Eun in the script,” she continued, “but I wanted to find a version of Sang Eun that was a little more ‘Lim Ji Yeon-esque’ than the Sang Eun the original novel’s readers had imagined, so I came up with new ideas.”

Lim Ji Yeon also spoke enthusiastically about her co-star Kim Tae Hee, sharing, “It was my first time working together with Tae Hee, and it was really great. I had always wanted to act with her, and I was excited when I heard we’d be doing this drama together. She made me feel so comfortable, and our acting chemistry was so great that I was able to better portray Sang Eun.”

She went on to add, “Please look forward to our top-notch chemistry.”

Finally, Lim Ji Yeon wrapped up by telling viewers, “‘Lies Hidden in My Garden’ is a suspense thriller about the meeting of two women who had been living completely different lives. I think the key points to keep an eye on are the unpredictable chemistry between the two women and the tightly-plotted story that is full of twists. I think you’ll be able to fully appreciate the charm of ‘Lies Hidden in My Garden’ if you focus on the stories of what happens to Sang Eun and Joo Ran.”
