tvN’s new fantasy romance drama “See You in My 19th Life” kicks off tonight!
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “See You in My 19th Life” will star Shin Hye Sun as Ban Ji Eum, a woman who has been repeatedly reincarnated for nearly a thousand years and remembers all of her past lives. After her 18th life is tragically cut short, Ban Ji Eum decides that in her 19th life, she will do everything she can to find a man named Moon Seo Ha (Ahn Bo Hyun) that she met in her 18th life.
With the drama’s first episode airing tonight, here are three things to keep an eye out for in the upcoming premiere:
As Ban Ji Eum has been reincarnated 18 times, she has lived a wide variety of different lives over the past millennium. In her fourth life, she was an alchemist; in her fifth, a swordsman; in her 14th, a flamenco dancer; and in her 17th, a circus troupe member.
While Ban Ji Eum has always wondered why she seems to be the only person who can remember all of her past lives, she finds a way out of her existential crisis in her 19th life: for the first time, she has a clear mission. After meeting someone special in her 18th life, Ban Ji Eum is determined to spend her 19th life tracking him down, and she will go to all sorts of wild lengths to find him again.
Viewers can look forward to seeing Ban Ji Eum’s colorful array of past lives—as well as the epic love story she is determined to begin in her 19th life.
Although Ban Ji Eum puts everything on the line to find love with Moon Seo Ha in her 19th life, she faces a seemingly undefeatable rival: herself. Years after her death, Moon Seo Ha still can’t get over his first love Yoon Joo Won (Kim Si Ah), who—unbeknownst to him—was Ban Ji Eum during her 18th life.
While Moon Seo Ha has become closed off and guarded after the death of his first love, Ban Ji Eum is intent on breaking down his walls, and she even asks him out from the very first time they meet.
Describing the chemistry between leads Shin Hye Sun and Ahn Bo Hyun, director Lee Na Jung commented, “They gave the vibe of an eccentric, cheerful, and unpredictable woman next to a cute and lovable man—it felt like a tall kid next to an even taller kid. Like a cat that always pops out of nowhere all of a sudden, and the puppy that gets startled every time. They each did a great job acting out their respective roles, which was great.”
Many of the characters in “See You in My 19th Life” struggle with loss and emotional wounds that can’t be seen from the outside, and their journey of healing will touch viewers’ hearts.
Director Lee Na Jung remarked, “This is a drama that gives comfort to those who have had to part ways with people they love due to an unexpected accident.”
Lee Hye, the writer of the original webtoon, explained, “Everyone has to say goodbye to someone they love at one point or another. Through the character of Ban Ji Eum, I wanted to give people the comfort of thinking, ‘Even if they can’t remember [their past life], couldn’t that person I loved be living happily somewhere in a new and different form?'”
Lee Na Jung added, “Even in our own lives, there can always be incidents where we suddenly part with the people around us. I wanted to try creating a romance that would be relatable and give people warmth.”
“See You in My 19th Life” will premiere on June 19 at 9:20 p.m. KST.
