On the latest episode of “The King of Mask Singer,” masked singer “Oven” blew the crowd away with her vocals!
During the October 27 broadcast of the MBC singing competition, eight new contestants stepped up to challenge the reigning champion for the throne.
In the third match-up of Round 1, “Oven” went head-to-head with her opponent through a duet rendition of Na Yoon Kwon’s iconic ballad “If It Was Me.”
While watching their performance, many of the celebrity panelists and audience members were unable to hide their awe at Oven’s impressive singing.
EXID’s Solji first remarked that Oven reminded her of popular singer-songwriter Choi Yu Ree—and when Ko Young Bae added that her vocal tone reminded him of Kwon Jin Ah, Solji excitedly agreed.
As a hint to her identity, Oven went on to perform a special dance cover medley, dancing snippets of the choreographies to EXID’s “Up & Down,” AOA’s “Like a Cat,” and SISTAR19’s “Gone Not Around Any Longer.”
After seeing her dancing skills, several of the celebrity panelists speculated that Oven might be a former idol who was now pursuing a solo career.
Although both singers stole the audience’s hearts with their singing, Oven ultimately lost the round to her opponent.
Oven then performed an emotional cover of Gummy’s “You Are My Everything” (from the soundtrack of the hit drama “Descendants of the Sun”). Halfway through, she took off her mask and revealed that she was former BESTie member Song Da Hye, who recently re-entered the spotlight on the popular dating show “EXchange 3″ (“Transit Love 3”).
The panel was shocked by Oven’s identity, noting that during her time with BESTie, Da Hye’s role was the main rapper of the group. Da Hye explained, “Right before we recorded [our first single], our group’s rapper wound up leaving the group. So because the older members were so good at singing, I tried rapping for the very first time.”
Da Hye also revealed that her longtime boyfriend Seo Dong Jin, with whom she got back together after their appearance on “EXchange 3,” was actually in her waiting room at that very moment as her manager.
“He’s better than I am at objectively assessing my strengths and skills than my skills, and he knows me better than I know myself,” shared Da Hye. “So even when I was choosing which songs to sing [on this show], he’d listen to me sing one line and then say, ‘Next.’ Or he’d say, ‘This song works. Next.’”
After the episode aired, Da Hye took to Instagram to post several photos she snapped backstage, including a couple selfie that Dong Jin took when she still had her mask on.
