On the December 20 broadcast of TV Chosun’s documentary “My Way,” veteran actress Kim Young Ok revealed that she almost lost her 30-year-old grandson through a DUI accident three years ago.
Kim Young Ok said, “My grandson is a victim of a DUI accident. The driver was driving completely intoxicated without a license in an unregistered vehicle. What were we supposed to do, since they hit my grandson who was trying to grab a taxi on the street? The car even went up to the sidewalk and hit him. My grandson didn’t even know he was hit by a car because the car hit him from the back. My grandson almost died. He even went into a coma, but he was able to survive. Imagine how surprised I was because of this.”
She also explained, “My daughter got a gauze towel to wash my grandson. She’s originally very thin and small, so she fainted while massaging my grandson so that he would wake up from the coma. This happened one year after my grandson’s accident. I feel like dying because my daughter is hurting. Truthfully, I feel like going crazy even if she’s even a little hurt. My daughter has to be healthy.”
She continued, “So now I pray, ‘Let my daughter stay healthy.’ And I tell my daughter, ‘You have to be healthy in order for my grandson to wake up.’ If this wasn’t so, why would I be taking care of him myself? She was prepared to take my grandson back and take care of him, but I didn’t let her because I was afraid she would be in more pain. I told her, ‘Don’t worry and take care of yourself while I’m taking care of him.’ Because of this, she’s eating well now and even traveling.”
Kim Young Ok also shared her resolve to stay strong for the sake of her grandson. She said, “Luckily, my grandson’s condition has gradually improved, and now he can move while riding a wheelchair. I have to think of time as medicine. I’m putting more thought into my health because I have to stay strong in order to take care of my grandson. I want to tell him to stay strong, just like now, without anything bad happening. His condition has gradually gotten better as he’s endured it all without getting too depressed. I’m thankful because of that.”
Born in 1937, Kim Young Ok is currently 82 years old. On KBS 1TV’s “AM Plaza” last August, she replied, “Why are you asking me this?” when the MC asked about her age. She asked people to forget her age, saying, “Backwards, it’s 28.”
