tvN confirms season 2 of ‘Secret Forest’ aka ‘Stranger’

Sep 3, 2019

A source from cable network tvN has confirmed on September 3 that its critically acclaimed thriller Secret Forest, also known as Stranger, will be returning for a second season next year.

The source said that writer Lee Soo-yeon (Life) will also be back to write the script for the second season, but another director will be at the helm of the production. Instead of PD Ahn Gil-ho (Memories Of The Alhambra), PD Park Hyun-suk will direct the series. Park directed Dance Sports GirlsUncontrollably Fond, and The Princess’ Man.

It remains to be seen whether season 1 leads Cho Seung-woo (Life) and Bae Doo-na (Kingdom) will reprise their roles in the new season. Lee Joon-hyuk (Designated Survivor: 60 Days), Yoo Jae-myung (My Fellow Citizens), and Shin Hye-sun (Angel’s Last Mission: Love) round out the main cast of the drama.

Secret Forest tells the story of an emotionless prosecutor (Cho Seung-woo) who teams up with a detective (Bae Doo-na) to uncover corruption in the prosecutor’s office and reveal the truth behind a murder case. The series won three awards at the 2018 Baeksang Arts Awards, including best actor for Cho Seung-woo, best screenplay for Lee Soo-yeon, and the grand prize. It was also featured on the New York Times list of the best TV shows of 2017.

The series gained positive reviews mainly for its writing and the strong performances of its actors and received so much love from local and international fans who have long called for the production of a sequel. Now that a second season is confirmed, the return of the original cast seems the only remaining thing they would ask for.
