TV Chosun has once again denied ties between their former CEO Bang Jung Oh and the late actress Jang Ja Yeon.
On April 2, news outlet The Hankyoreh reported that the Investigative Team of Past Affairs at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office secured a testimony that Bang Jung Oh is deeply connected to the case involving the death of Jang Ja Yeon.
According to the report, a person identified as Mr. Kim revealed that in 2014, he overheard Bang Jung Oh talking about a woman he frequently met up with and contacted in 2008 or 2009, who later died by suicide. Bang Jung Oh also reportedly talked about asking a personal favor to an acquaintance to cover up the incident.
Mr. Kim also testified that he heard Bang Jung Oh talking about an acquaintance known as Mr. H, who made it seem like someone other than the former CEO was entertained, so “the case was covered up nicely.”
It is reported that Bang Jung Oh and Mr. Kim became close after meeting at a gathering in 2014. Mr. Kim is currently serving time for charges of committing fraud by overstating his sales to receive investment money. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Another acquaintance known as Mr. O, who has known Bang Jung Oh for almost 10 years, also testified about the alleged connection between the former TV Chosun CEO and Jang Ja Yeon. According to Mr. O, he heard from Mr. H that Bang Jung Oh exchanged a phone call with Jang Ja Yeon prior to her death.
Bang Jung Oh is the second son of Chosun Ilbo CEO Bang Sang Hoon. He resigned from his position as the CEO of TV Chosun in November 2018 following an incident where his 10-year-old daughter was caught abusing the family’s personal chauffeur.
He is also reportedly on the list of people the late Jang Ja Yeon claimed she was forced to sexually entertain along with his uncle Bang Yong Hoon, as well as other figures in the business and media world.
On March 25, TV Chosun denied Bang Jung Oh’s involvement with Jang Ja Yeon following reports that the former CEO got in touch with the late actress prior to her death and put pressure on the police to delete the alleged call records between the two.
The following is the full statement from TV Chosun:
The Hankyoreh’s report on April 2, which stated that former TV Chosun CEO Bang Jung Oh frequently contacted and met up with the late Jang Ja Yeon and that he asked a personal favor to cover up the case, is not true at all.
Mr. H and Mr. O, who The Hankyoreh quoted, are also denying making the comments that were stated in the report. We plan to take legal action against The Hankyoreh for releasing fake news based on inaccurate words from people such as a person who is serving time for charges of fraud.
