Episode 5 of The Impossible Heir begins with Tae-oh and In-ha discussing their next course of action. In-ha expresses worry about the raid but Tae-oh already has a plan for it. The prosecutor in-charge of the raid on Kang-oh is a perfect fit for the plan since he has no connections and a suitable scapegoat.
At the chairman’s meeting with the prosecutor, he accepts all the charges levied on him but In-ha and their attorney presents him with a pen-drive; contents prepared by Tae-oh, having all the dirty details about the state’s legal system.
The news soon spreads to different district attorneys and eventually the chairman is released with no charges as a bargain. The prosecutor is sent on an exile and thus becomes a scapegoat, just like Tae-oh had imagined.
The chairman visits Chu Hyuk-jin as a warning but we don’t know what he does with him yet.
Elsewhere, In-ha’s official entry into the Kang-oh group and his approval by the public as a “fresh face” has the two elder Kang siblings worried. On top of this, Tae-oh is promoted to the Division Director role and In-ha to the Chief Manager role.
Seung-joo and In-ju further receive information that Geum-suk has left the house for the family villa as a punishment by the chairman. In-ju is happy about this development and enjoys himself by throwing a party while Seung-joo is called by the chairman.
The chairman saved Seung-joo from being dismissed in return for living a quiet life. It’s clear that Seung-joo is harbouring resentment against the chairman even though he doesn’t show it.
Elsewhere, the chairman discusses with Tae-oh about selling Kang Oh Tech One which is considered a weak point of Kang Oh. We also get to know that a chinese company IM had attempted to leak the technology which is why the chairman wants to sell it as soon as possible. He wants Kang in-ha to be put in charge.
Elsewhere, Hye-won and In-ha go to the beach where In-ha gets the ring on her finger. Tae-oh is uncomfortable when In-ha sends him a text about getting married.
Back to the chairman and Tae-oh, we get more insights into Kang Oh Tech One. It is a weakness because in a long term, it is destined to bring more losses than gains. The chairman shows Tae-oh a hologram of a huge building, telling him that it is going to complete the Royal Road Project. We don’t really know it’s significance yet.
Tae-oh meets the mysterious hacker who is finally introduced to us as a former North Korean spy Kim Gwangil, living in South Korea as Seonu Wan, who once manipulated banks worldwide. Tae-oh wants him to lay low but he rejects the idea.
Elsewhere, Hee-chan is pursuing Hee-ju for marriage but to no avail while Hee-ju is pining for Tae-oh.
At the meeting, Tae-oh and In-ha develop a strategy to negotiate with the buyer of Kang Oh Tech One, Daejong Innovation, owned by Hee-chan’s family. There are two new additions to their team which In-ha brings as he trusts them but Tae-oh is highly suspicious. Nevertheless, they work tirelessly to make this deal a success.
Elsewhere, Hye-won is called by one of the close aide of the congressman who offers her to become an aide instead of a secretary. Tae-oh and Hye-won later discuss this development and Tae-oh offers to help Hye-won rise the ranks but she declines the offer.
The tension and lingering feelings between them is evident. Hye-won regrets choosing In-ha over Tae-oh but decides against this thought. At the same time, we find a mysterious person following Tae-oh, clicking his pictures with Hye-won but suspiciously deletes them.
On the day of the negotiation, the Daejong’s negotiator changes to Hee-chan. the meeting begins and Hee-chan is not interested in the deal and demands a 30% cut in price with no employment succession.
At the same time, we see tensions rising and a subtle rift between Tae-oh and In-ha. Tae-oh suspects In-ha’s team member and asks him to go home but In-ha refuses to let him leave.
Eventually, In-ha decides to use his timeslip tactics. According to the tactics, In-ha will ask IM to leak information to Daejong that IM is interested in buying Kang Oh Tech One, highlighting a price war might soon take place. IM agreed to help for free because In-ha threatened them with their technology leak information while they were in between a negotiation deal with a different buyer.
If news leaks about IM’s malpractice, they might lose the deal, therefore they agree to cooperate. Tae-oh thinks that leveraging someone’s weakness might lead to more problems but In-ha is adamant.
Soon, the plan is in place and Daejong is caught in the trap. They agree to buy Kang-oh at 13% profit along with employee succession.
However, the chairman is fuming about how In-ha deals with the issue. He punishes Tae-oh as In-ha had to do the dirty work himself, which in chairman’s point of view, In-ha’s fault. He tells them to keep it low until the deal is signed officially.
Later, the chairman expresses his uneasiness about In-ha, saying that In-ha is like the chairman himself. He needed a fresh face and not someone who works like the chairman does. Tae-oh suggest the chairman to tell this to In-ha so he can understand what the chairman wants.
The deal is signed finally. Elsewhere, Hee-chan asks In-ju’s help to make Hee-ju agree to marry him otherwise Hee-chan’s father would not transfer communication rights to him. In-ju promises to help him but at a price.
Later, In-ha is playing basketball when Tae-oh joins. He leaves when chairman calls him while Tae-oh continues playing until a mysterious figure attacks him by striking him from the back. Tae-oh falls and Hye-won receives a call from him but the attacker disconnects it and leaves while Tae-oh loses consciousness.
The Episode Review
This episode like all others had more conversations than action. All of the takeover drama has pushed to the side. The plot is already quite uninteresting and slow for a revenge drama. One finds themselves asking, “Get to the point!” way too often for this kdrama.
We still aren’t sure why there’s a love triangle plot going on into background. It doesn’t complement or add to the plot progression, at least for now.
The mysterious hacker card was again a stand-alone quick fix kind of a scenario to bring Seong-joo down and once that’s over, we don’t know if his character will be used again.
All in all, this show’s going downhill at this point but we still hope it gets to the point soon enough. And so, we will meet you in the next recap, stay tuned! Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Do you think this kdrama has anything to offer yet?
