Woo Ji Won is a South Korean retired basketball player, TV personality and former professor. He enjoyed playing baseball and ran track as a child but began playing basketball when his elementary school started a team and recruited him to join. He graduated from Kyungbock High School and later obtained a bachelor's degree in Law and a master's degree in Physical Education, both from Yonsei University. During his college career he lived during the "golden era" of domestic college basketball where most players were treated like idols. He began his professional career in 1996 when he signed for the Daewoo Securities (now Daegu KOGAS Pegasus) when the Korean Basketball League (KBL) was still semi-professional. After completing his mandatory military service, he moved to the Seoul Samsung Thunders in 2001 and, after only one year with them, he moved to the Ulsan Hyundai Automons (later renamed Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus). He remained with the Ulsan team for 8 years before retiring in 2010. His number (10) was retired by the team shortly afterwards. After retiring, he became a commentator for SBS Sports and has also appeared on various variety programs. He married his non-celebrity girlfriend in 2002 and the couple has two children.
