Melon To Now Count Towards Billboard’s Global Charts

Data from Melon, Korea’s largest music streaming service, will now be reflected on Billboard’s global charts!

Earlier this week, Melon’s parent company Kakao Entertainment officially announced that it had signed a contract with Luminate (formerly Nielsen Music), the company that provides the data for the United States’ Billboard charts.

As of June 7, streaming and download data from Melon now counts towards Billboard’s two global charts—the Global 200 and the Global Excl. U.S. chart—as well as Billboard’s local South Korea Songs chart.

Billboard’s global charts, which were launched in September 2020, rank songs’ global popularity based on streaming and sales activity from over 200 territories around the world. The Global 200 includes data from the United States, while the Global Excl. U.S. charts specifically excludes data from the United States.

Melon’s strategy director Park Doo Wan commented, “We are delighted to be able to spotlight K-pop and its artists to the whole world through our data. We plan to continue working together with a wide variety of partners both within Korea and abroad in order to heighten the value of music in the future as well.”
