Judge Go Jong Young of the 30th panel for civil procedures at the Seoul Central District Court ruled that Mr. Kwak is to pay a total of 1.3 billion won (approximately $1.1 million) for the damages suit filed against Mr. Kwak by Song Sun Mi and her daughter. The judge stated, “Mr. Kwak is to pay Song Sun Mi 780 million won (approximately $670,400) and 530 million won (approximately $455,500) to her daughter.”
In response to this ruling, Mr. Kwak’s mother said, “Show me proof that he arranged [the murder].” She also said, “I’m furious and disappointed by the way the Department of Justice lays made-up crime charges [against my son].”
Mr. Kwak was a cousin of Song Sun Mi’s late husband and he was charged with paying 2 billion won (approximately $1.7 million) to another man to kill the victim in August of 2017. The deceased had been helping his grandfather file a civil suit after his grandfather’s land had been illegally seized.
Though Mr. Kwak denied the charges during trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in both the first and second trials. The Supreme Court denied his appeal at the end of 2018.
