Let’s face it. Romance is not for everyone, and even for those who love the romance genre, it can be nice to mix it up sometimes. Luckily for K-drama fans, there are always K-dramas out there that do not have much of a focus on the romance theme. Here are six of those K-dramas worth checking out!
SBS’s drama “Taxi Driver” involves a taxi driver by the name of Kim Do Gi (Lee Je Hoon) who is secretly a vigilante crime fighter. His main goal, as well as the goal of the taxi driving company he works for, is getting revenge on behalf of the oppressed and those who have been wronged. He joins a team of other vigilante crime fighters, and they work together to bring justice to the streets of South Korea.
Despite this series having not a single love line, it makes for an exhilarating and edge-of-your-seat watch. There is something about seeing Kim Do Gi kick some serious butt and put the villains in their place that brings so much satisfaction while watching. You’ll oddly find yourself feeling so refreshed and healed while seeing these victims get the justice that they deserve. Especially with all the injustice going on in the world right now, you’ll be completely satisfied with Do Gi’s ability to fight crime and how good he looks doing it.
Han Joo Won (Yeo Jin Goo) is a police officer who gets transferred to a small town from the big city of Seoul. It’s an adjustment to say the least, and he doesn’t really make friends too quickly. He soon finds himself invested in a case, hoping to solve a mystery that happened 20 years prior. His main suspect is his partner and fellow police officer Lee Dong Shik (Shin Ha Kyun).
The eerie part of this series is that everyone is a potential suspect. No one can be trusted, and with this much suspense and mystery, the lack of romance is not even the slightest bit of concern. Not to mention, with Shin Ha Kyun and Yeo Jin Goo, you’ll be thoroughly impressed with their acting skills and wonder if they are also in fact responsible for the murders in any way. The chemistry these two exude throughout the series is unnerving and only a testament to how great they are as actors. It’s also no surprise that Shin Ha Kyun snagged the Best Actor award at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards – he’s a legend!

“Through the Darkness” stars Kim Nam Gil as Song Ha Young, a police officer who gets recruited into the Criminal Behavior Analysis team. The series is based on the true story of South Korea’s first profiler, and it takes viewers on a journey into the various homicide cases he helped solve.
This series is guaranteed to have viewers anticipating the outcomes of the cases, and the cliffhangers will make it an easy binge watch. The heart-pounding and thrilling moments when Ha Young gets very close to solving the cases are exhilarating. It’s also very cool seeing how he analyzes the crime scenes, leading him to various suspects. The drama provides a bird’s-eye view into what goes on in the minds of profilers and how they crack cases. There is hardly much romance in this series, but the anticipation of figuring out the cases is sure to keep you entertained.
Lee Si Young plays a cop by the name of Jo Soo Ji who is trying to avenge the death of her daughter Yu Na. Her daughter had been murdered by Yoon Si Wan, who was able to get away unscathed as his father Yoon Seung Ro is a well-respected prosecutor. She tries to get revenge but is unsuccessful, and just when she’s about to go to jail, she is taken in by Kim Young Kwang and his team consisting of Kim Seul Gi, Key, and Shin Dong Wook. This is also the part where it gets really cool because the team starts to use their skills to bring down Yoon Seung Ro, as they all have a hidden agenda with him.
At first, it seems as though there could be a potential love story between the two leads, but then as the story picks up, you become thoroughly invested in them just getting revenge on Seung Ro. The whole team working together to bring one truly evil man down really becomes the driving force of the series. And with exceptional acting, including a great supporting cast of Kim Seul Gi and Key, you really can’t expect anything short of a great series. It’s an exciting watch, and the lack of romance is not even an issue!
“D.P.” is a hit series that is based on the popular webtoon of the same name. Meaning “Deserter Pursuit,” the series focuses on two soldiers named Ahn Jun Ho (Jung Hae In) and Han Ho Yeol (Goo Kyo Hwan) who are recruited to find and bring back soldiers who have fled the military.
The success of this series and webtoon lies solely in the fact that there isn’t a dull moment with these two running around chasing soldiers – especially when it comes to the bromance between the two main characters. Seeing the soldiers that they come across and have to bring back to the base may not seem like an exhilarating storyline, but some of the heartfelt stories of these soldiers will have you sympathizing and understanding their reasons for fleeing. You’ll feel the bromance through the screen and come to understand why Goo Kyo Hwan shot to stardom.
Kim Sang Joong, Park Hae Jin, Jo Dong Hyuk, and Ma Dong Seok star in “Bad Guys,” a K-drama about a bunch of criminals who band together to help bring down more notorious criminals.
This series was such a success that there is a second season as well as a film that comes from it. Seeing this very eclectic group of misfits come together to do some good in the world is uplifting and so satisfying. It’s quick-paced, and the action scenes are thoroughly enjoyable. The redemption and healing that these criminals experience while working together really make the series a heartfelt watch. They are guaranteed to win you over with their individual charms!
