KBS Wins Annual Face-Off In Ratings Between KBS Drama Awards, SBS Drama Awards, And MBC Music Festival

 

On December 31, the three public broadcasters—KBS, SBS, and MBC—typically go head-to-head with awards shows that start late in the evening and go past midnight in the new year. Last year, it was the 2020 SBS Drama Awards that won the face-off.

The 2021 SBS Drama Awards, the 2021 KBS Drama Awards, and the 2021 MBC Music Festival aired at similar times on New Year’s Eve. According to Nielsen Korea, the 2021 KBS Drama Awards won the night with average nationwide ratings of 6.3 percent in the first half and 6.5 percent in the second half.

On average, the 2021 MBC Music Festival edged out the 2021 SBS Drama Awards. The SBS Drama Awards recorded ratings of 3.9 and 5.4 percent, while the first half of the MBC Music Festival recorded 5.4 percent and the second half got 5.6 percent.

Overall, KBS, SBS, and MBC air three end-of-year shows in December: a music festival (SBS Gayo Daejun, KBS Song Festival, MBC Music Festival), the Drama Awards, and the Entertainment Awards.

Looking across all three end-of-year shows in 2021, MBC was the overall winner in ratings. Both their Drama Awards and Entertainment Awards recorded ratings over 7 percent, and their music festival was the only one of the three broadcasters to surpass 5 percent in ratings. The 2021 MBC Drama Awards recorded ratings of 4.9 and 7.0 percent and the 2021 MBC Entertainment Awards 6.4 and 7.2 percent.

However, the highest ratings across all nine end-of-year shows was recorded by the 2021 KBS Entertainment Awards with 7.3 and 5.7 percent. The 2021 KBS Song Festival recorded 2.4, 2.4, and 2.3 percent. The 2021 SBS Entertainment Awards recorded ratings of 5.0 and 6.3 percent, and the 2021 SBS Gayo Daejun 2.5 and 1.7 percent.

Meanwhile, tvN’s “Bad and Crazy” was one of the only dramas that aired on the night of December 31, recording ratings of 3.398 percent.
