“You’re bound to meet unexpected situations in life. Even if you use an umbrella, you’ll end up getting drenched,” says Doo Shik (Kim Seon Ho) to the prickly Yoon Hye Jin (Shin Min Ah) in “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.”
Hye Jin has moved bag and baggage to Gongjin, a seaside town which holds a special place in her heart. She wants to start afresh, but her rigid attitude often comes in the way of her relationships with people, including her own family. Hong Doo Shik, who is the town’s chief handyman and most popular citizen, has an amiable relationship with everyone on all sides. But deep down he is hurting, even as he brings cheer to those around him. Though it’s friction at first sight for the two, Doo Shik makes Hye Jin realize that life does not come with a user manual, and in their own way they comfort and heal each other.

His sole mission once back is to meet Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum) but has no clue about what her grownup version looks like. Hye Jin in the meantime is hustling between several part time jobs, and her looks are no longer defined as pretty as they did when Sung Joon had last seen her. But Sung Joon is earnest to see her. He carries an umbrella with him, which has a deep significance in his life, and the only person who understands it is Hye Jin. Hye Jin, conscious about her looks, sends her best friend in place to meet Sung Joon instead. She thinks she has successfully avoided seeing him until she lands herself a job at the very magazine Sung Joon heads. Though Sung Joon is initially exasperated with Hye Jin, he finds himself wondering why this frizzy-haired and red-cheeked girl reminds him of the young Hye Jin. His doubts are confirmed when she shields him from the rain as she had many years ago, since only Hye Jin knows how the rain immobilizes and traumatizes Sung Joon, and it was she who helped and supported him through it.
