“Lovely Runner” is back this week with much more emotions and excitement for all of us who are earnestly rooting for Im Sol (Kim Hye Yoon) and Ryu Sun Jae (Byeon Woo Seok). Last week, we were left hanging on the news of Sun Jae being attacked by the man who tried to kill Sol in the past. As she frantically looks for the watch to go back in time once again, realizing that this might be her last chance to truly save Sun Jae, there were several significant moments that will probably set the path for the remaining episodes of this amazing drama. Here are five of those moments!
Warning: spoilers from episodes 9-10 ahead!
Just a few hours after the attack and promising to change things for good as Sun Jae fights for his life, Im Sol finds herself back in the past, this time as a freshman college student. To nobody’s surprise, her first encounter with this timeline’s Sun Jae is as heart-fluttering as the previous ones, as he graciously catches her after she falls from a horse statue. However, Sol runs away immediately, not wanting to interfere anymore with his life, nor wishing for him to continue liking her. She knows that if he is involved with her, he could get hurt by the man who is still hunting her down.
Though he is used to her indifference towards him, it is obvious to Sun Jae that there is something different in Sol’s expression and actions this time around. He is instinctively able to tell apart the past Sol from the future Sol. And although he is aware of her intents to stay as far away from him as possible, it looks like he is almost physically unable to not worry about her. It’s so much so that he takes petty revenge against a college student who was teasing her, and he follows her around during their school retreat. He even helps her when she accidentally gets herself in a trap, proving that no matter how much she tries, she can’t change people’s hearts, especially when it comes to Ryu Sun Jae’s.
This episode shows the birth of “Sudden Shower,” the song that Sun Jae writes while thinking about Sol, their time together, and how much he longs for her. Though at this point it is still uncertain how Sun Jae will join “Eclipse,” we know that to Ryu Sun Jae, Sol will always be someone significant. Ironically, as there is no one more important to Sol than Sun Jae, she desperately tries to make the best out of her time in the past, giving the police as much information about the assailant as possible, preparing herself with self defense weapons, and not forgetting that her main purpose this time is to make sure nobody can harm Sun Jae, not even for her sake.
Despite both having the best of intentions, loving each other so deeply, and longing to be together, the tension bursts out the moment Sol realizes that once again Sun Jae is concerned about her. While remembering her short but sweet time with Sun Jae in the future, she regrets not having been sincere. She asks him to meet before his attack, and with so much emotions inside her, she desperately asks past Sun Jae to never care for her again. Especially given how much she has already hurt him with her rejection and conflicts. But even then, he can’t seem to back off and leave her alone, despite feeling miserable to see her so heartbroken.

Luckily for Sun Jae (though not so much for Sol), she quickly passes out after that moment, given that she was already heavily drunk. And just like the first time, they accidentally kiss, giving Sun Jae another precious memory that, sadly, Sol won’t remember in the future. This is when Sol unconsciously starts to sing the song that Sun Jae had composed for her, puzzling him with her words as she confesses that she knew the song from the future and that she will change things for sure.
Confused, Sun Jae confronts her right when she is about to run away in order to prevent the assailant and Sun Jae meeting again. Alarmed by the mere thought of her leaving, he straight away asks her if she really comes from the future, which gives her no choice but to admit to it. Though she tries to explain the circumstances and that she probably doesn’t have that much time left, Sun Jae remains skeptical. He believes it is just another excuse to avoid him and his feelings.

Given the mess she is in, Im Sol gives the final push to force Sun Jae to leave the country to try rehabilitation for his injured shoulder once again. This time it’ll be in the States, which will make it easier for her to keep him safe. Sun Jae is hesitant about the idea, but at the same time he can’t do much about it, especially since the only person who could convince him of staying is the first one who wishes to see him go. However, Sun Jae wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t try for one last time to confirm whether he has a chance or not of winning Sol’s heart.
Just like we saw in last week’s episode, she definitely wants to reciprocate his feelings. She slowly went from being a devoted fan who saw him as a star that brightened up her life, to the person who saved her life first, to now the true love of her life. But as the urge to protect him and keep him away from harm’s way is stronger, she once again refuses to give him any hope. She says she’s never had feelings for him, although we know that her love for him is strong enough to cross time and space in hopes to see him alive and well, even if that means she can’t be with him for the rest of her life.
The peak of this week’s episodes arrives the moment Sun Jae is getting ready to leave the country. Just as he couldn’t let go of Sol for 15 years in the previous timeline, he holds onto the words of Kim Tae Sung (Song Geon Hee) and decides to go looking for the time capsule. To his surprise, he finds the letter from Sol and starts to connect the dots. This ultimately makes him realize that the present Sol really comes from the future, she actually likes him, and that what she is afraid of is him dying.

After Sol thinks Sun Jae is gone, she gets chased by a truck similar to that of the assailant. But Sun Jae arrives at her side, rescuing Sol against her will, and this time he ignores her words and pleas and starts stating facts. The facts are, she likes him enough to travel back in time, he might die in the future, and he isn’t afraid of dying if it means saving Sol. And he seals the deal with a beautiful kiss. We still have to process the fact that Sol and Sun Jae are together again and that he is willing to lay down his own life in order to be with her. Plus, she can go back to the future leaving him behind. We will just have to wait for next week’s new episodes of “Lovely Runner”!
