Whoever said that breakups are easy certainly didn’t see the latest episodes of “Cinderella at 2AM.” Most of the time, there are situations full of regrets and uncertainty, but most commonly, awkwardness. On this occasion, Ha Yun Seo (Shin Hyun Been) and Seo Ju Won (Moon Sang Min) have to deal with a lot of uncomfortable moments after they decide to part ways for good. Despite Yun Seo’s decision to quit her job, there are still many things to take care of for her to disappear from Ju Won’s life forever. But will he let her go that easily? Let’s see how they coped with their current situation as ex-lovers this week!
Warning: spoilers from episodes 5-6 ahead!
In K-dramas, few things can be as awkward as finding out two colleagues are dating, except perhaps finding out after they broke up. And with Ha Yun Seo’s bad luck, that’s exactly what happens to her when her coworkers catch her and Seo Jun Won in a passionate embrace right in her house. Despite Yun Seo’s efforts to make things remain as normal as possible, her colleagues don’t know the meaning of subtlety, as they make everything more obvious to everybody.
Admittedly, those moments are the comedic point that we needed after last week’s stressful moments. But despite that, you can’t help but feel sorry for Yun Seo. Even if her colleagues are trying their best to help her make things smoother between them, they quickly go too over the top, to the point of arranging a blind date (cameo appearance by Kwon Yool) for Yun Seo, creating a big misunderstanding between her and Ju Won.
To work beside your ex-girlfriend surely can’t be easy, but having to be her direct superior and watching her go on a blind date just a few days after she broke up with you must be almost unbearable. So, it’s only natural that things turn more than a bit awkward between Ju Won and Yun Seo when she meets a headhunter without realizing it’s not a work-related appointment, but a date. This conflicts Ju Won, who is still struggling a lot with the fact that he still loves her and his decision to let her go.
Although Yun Seo feels heartbroken seeing how cold and distant Ju Won is with her after their misunderstanding, she really can’t do much about it. After all, it has been her decision all along to go ahead with their separation. Even if there’s pressure from Ju Won’s mother, it has always been Yun Seo who disregarded Ju Won’s wish to continue with their relationship, so she can’t do anything but accept his new attitude towards her.
While the main couple is having a hard time because they can’t be together, the second leads have to figure out how to live together as a married couple. Seo Si Won (Yoon Park) and Lee Mi Jin (Park So Jin) are fundamentally different, and their miscommunication creates a lot of misunderstandings between them. However, their cute chemistry is too funny and endearing to not root for them. Their story indeed started only as a marriage of convenience between their families, but they have the potential to be one of the sweetest couples yet.
In these couple of episodes, they slowly but surely build up the foundation for their romance, like sharing meals and checking up on each other at least once a day. As Rome wasn’t built in one day, there are bound to be certain awkward moments between them. But we can see that their regard for the little details, even since their first meeting, is what might conquer each other’s hearts little by little. If there’s something to really look forward to in the comedy side of this drama, it’s this couple.
In this week’s episodes, we finally discover the identity of the mysterious person who has been lurking around Yun Seo through text messages. This person turns out to be artist Lee Seong Min (Lee Hyun Woo), who continues texting her despite her annoyance. He shows an unconventional interest in Yun Seo, which is shown when he accepts to be part of an art exhibit at the last minute. He continues chasing after her even in the moments when Yun Seo is harsh with him, hinting that he might be in love with her.
However, we see that Lee Seong Min’s interest is not exactly a romantic one, though it could develop into one. He feels a certain connection to Yun Seo because she inspires him to keep on living after hitting rock bottom due to an incident with his family. When he explains this to her, she quickly lets her guard down, even showing that she could be opening the door to a budding friendship with the quirky artist.
At this point, it was sort of predictable that there would be some rivalry between Seo Ju Won and a second male lead. But, as common as love triangles are, this trio is quite peculiar in its own way. Firstly, Lee Seong Min and Ju Won appear to have more things in common than they could ever admit to. Apart from that, Yun Seo is still in love with Ju Won, so there’s little chance there will be something more than a friendship between her and Seong Min.
But since both of them can bond over their traumatic experiences, one can only guess how much closer they will be in the future. For now, to Ju Won’s dismay, it seems that the small interactions with Seong Min are bringing fresh air to the suffocating situation Yun Seo has been living in. But of course, as this is a K-drama, anyone can already predict how this love triangle will still bring more drama to the show. So let’s wait and see how things will develop for our heroine next weekend on “Cinderella at 2AM”!
