Yoon Bak and Sooyoung talked in more detail about their upcoming drama!
MBC’s “Fanletter, Please” is a four-part romantic comedy series about an actress who faces the biggest crisis in her life in the entertainment industry and a man who has to protect his daughter’s pure heart by writing fake replies to her fan letters. Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung stars as A-list actress Han Kang Hee, while Yoon Bak stars as Han Kang Hee’s first love Bang Jung Suk, a devoted single father whose young daughter is battling leukemia.
Ahead of the drama premiere, Sooyoung and Yoon Bak sat down for an interview to dish on the charms of their characters, their chemistry, and more.
First, the two actors expressed their pride in the fact that the script for the drama won the Excellence Award at the MBC Drama Script Contest last year and shared what made them choose the series. Sooyoung shared on her first thoughts upon reading the script, “I felt that the process of the lonely top star Kang Hee overcoming her trauma by meeting Jung Suk and his small-yet-strong daughter Yoo Na by changing herself over time after she realizes once again the importance of love and the little things in life was adorably and lovely drawn in the drama. There are many coming-of-age stories, but this drama also felt like a coming-of-age drama for the grown-up children in their 30s.”
She added, “There are many things I can relate to because I am similar in age to Kang Hee, and the drama also has scenes of when we were in high school, so I had fun working on the drama while recalling back to those days.”
Yoon Bak also expressed what drew him to the script, saying, “I was interested in seeing the events and characters alternate between daily life and fantasy. Moreover, I wanted to try taking on the role because being someone’s father who is in a reciprocated romance felt new to me.”
On the topic of their own similarities to their characters in the drama, Sooyoung said she felt like she 60 percent resembles Han Kang Hee as she hinted at Kang Hee’s unexpected charm, “Kang Hee was originally bright and cheerful, but she is a lonely person who builds walls to protect herself due to her trauma and family history. After she met Jung Suk, she started to show her original cheerfulness little by little, and I think Kang Hee’s charm is in that aloof yet foolish personality that she has.”
To the same question, Yoon Bak answered, “Whether an object or an idea, the fact that he can’t get himself out of something he’s fully into I think is the similarity I have to Jung Suk.” He added, “Jung Suk talks and acts as if he is very rational when he meets his friends, but he is different when he is with his daughter Yoo Na. Although he is Yoo Na’s parent, at times Yoo Na often is more mature. He’s a low-key clumsy character. I think it’s Jung Suk’s charm that he can go back and forth between those two personalities.”
When asked how their chemistry was, the two didn’t hesitate to compliment each other generously. Sooyoung said, “I was comfortable even before I met him because I’ve always heard that he was such a good person. [After meeting him,] I was so thankful because he always brightened up the atmosphere on set and made me comfortable.” Sooyoung also remarked that Yoon Bak brings a good influence on the actors around him as he always diligently studies his character and as a result encourages his partners to contemplate more on their roles too. “There was one tough day because Kang Hee had a lot of emotional scenes, but I was thankful that Yoon Bak was so considerate and made it easier for me,” Sooyoung said, expressing her gratitude for the actor.
In response, Yoon Bak said about his first impression of Sooyoung, “She was so reliable since I first met and talked to her. She had researched a lot about the characters, and it showed well on set. Thanks to her, I was able to film comfortably and happily. Because I gained faith in her, there was no trouble for us in presenting opinions and communicating, and I think that enabled many better scenes to come out.”
To conclude, the actors described their chemistry in one sentence. Sooyoung defined it as, “The growth of clumsy grown-up children.” She then explained, “As Kang Hee reunites with her first love Jung Suk from high school, she overcomes her trauma and heals from the loneliness and sorrow she felt as a top actress.” On the other hand, Yoon Bak left a more cryptic description saying, “One’s sincerity will eventually see the light of day,” and hinted, “You will know why when you watch the broadcast.”
