MBC’s upcoming drama “When the Phone Rings” has dropped new stills!
Based on a popular web novel, “When the Phone Rings” tells the story of Baek Sa Eon (Yoo Yeon Seok) and Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin), a couple that married for convenience—and the romance that blossoms between them after a threatening phone call.
Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin star as Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Joo, a business couple in an arranged marriage. While they appear to be a perfect match, their relationship is strictly professional, and they barely communicate at home. Their marriage is part of a powerful alliance between Baek Eui Yong (Yoo Sung Joo), a presidential candidate, and Hong Il Kyung (Choi Kwang Il), the head of the country’s leading media company.
Han Jae Yi plays Hong In Ah, the stepsister of Hong Hee Joo and the original fiancée of Baek Sa Eon. In Ah was set to marry Sa Eon but vanished the day before the wedding, leaving Hee Joo to take her place. The mystery of In Ah’s disappearance adds intrigue, and now she reappears unexpectedly, raising the tension like a ticking time bomb. Han Jae Yi’s dramatic transformation in this role has fans excited.
Yoo Sung Joo portrays Baek Eui Yong, a top presidential contender and the father of Baek Sa Eon. Yi Yong feels inferior to his son, who reminds him of his own father, Baek Jang Ho (Jung Dong Hwan), a prominent political figure. Consumed by ambition, Eui Yong plans to use Sa Eon, who enjoys high public trust and favorability, to secure an election victory by any means necessary. His relentless pursuit adds intense tension to the story.
Choo Sang Mi stars as Shim Kyu Jin, Sa Eon’s mother. A criminal psychologist and negotiation expert from a prestigious family of educators, Kyu Jin is determined to help her husband Eui Yong become president. Despite holding impressive titles—daughter-in-law of a prominent political family, mother of a presidential spokesperson, and skilled criminal psychologist—she exudes an air of darkness and unhappiness. Viewers are intrigued by the secrets she may be hiding and Choo Sang Mi’s surprising role in adding twists to the story.
Choi Kwang Il and Oh Hyun Kyung play Hong Il Kyung, chairman of the media company Cheongun Ilbo, and his second wife, Kim Yeon Hee. As Hee Joo’s adoptive father, Il Kyung built the family business by securing exclusive stories, often using his ties to the late Congressman Baek Jang Ho to obtain sensitive information about government officials. Now, he positions himself as the kingmaker for his in-laws, covering up Eui Yong’s mistakes. Yeon Hee, who believes remarrying was the best decision of her life, is skilled at manipulating and gaslighting her daughter. The couple’s actions—including using their child as leverage in a strategic partnership with the Baek family—add intrigue to the plot.
Yoo Yeon Seok, Chae Soo Bin, Han Jae Yi, Yoo Sung Joo, Choo Sang Mi, Choi Kwang Il, and Oh Hyun Kyung will bring to life the complex stories of two families tied together by strong connections. Their performances are expected to drive the drama, with characters evolving as events unfold.
“When the Phone Rings” will premiere on November 22 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
