WJSN recently reflected on the past year and discussed what they looked forward to in 2019, as well as their future together.
2018 had been an important year for WJSN, who went through the biggest amount of growth since their debut. With group and individual promotions, they succeeded in getting the public to learn more about their team as well as each of their 10 members.
“It’s true,” began Dawon. “Last year, we had a lot of individual promotions, and we continued with our album promotions, so we were continuously busy. There were times when it was physically tiring, but we also achieved our longtime goal of winning No. 1 on a music show. It was also the year where we established our official fan club. 2018 is a meaningful year in many ways.”
She added, “Every time we released an album, we said that our goal was to win No. 1, and we achieved that goal last year. I think that was the most memorable because it’s such a good memory. I want to win No. 1 again this year.”
Bona said, “I feel that we grew a lot just from how many people recognize us, but we also attended the most amount of award shows last year following our debut. Seeing that, I thought, ‘We really worked hard.'”
The members looked proud of their group while speaking during the interview. When this was brought up, Exy stated, “I feel proud that I became a part of WJSN.” Dayoung added, “We have a lot of members. At the beginning of our debut, there were reactions that our faces and names were hard to match, but it seems like they’re able to recognize each one of us these days. We promoted in many ways since the beginning of the year, including variety shows, and I think we’re seeing a bit of the results of our hard work.”
As WJSN’s popularity has grown over the years, so has the expectations towards the group. Exy revealed, “It’s now a big concern when we prepare for a new album. At the beginning of our debut, we were busy just completing the things we were given. But in order to show an improved version of ourselves, we’re now actively participating in the album.”
She continued, “We’re now trying to incorporate a lot of our opinions when producing an album. That way, our level of satisfaction as well as the fans’ gets higher. The number of self-produced songs is also increasing. That much more burden has been added on, but I’m happy that we even have these kinds of concerns. It’s proof that WJSN is growing as artists.”
Expanding on the discussion about WJSN’s albums, Eunseo said, “Each album as of late has included the members’ self-produced songs. We now actively speak up about the things we want to do. This isn’t just about the music and concept, but everything from our outfits to our hairstyles. All of the members are participating with ambition.”
The members then spoke about some hopes for the group’s future. Bona named a special seasonal album that includes a song for the summer or winter. Exy said, “I want to show a more popular but unique concept. I want to showcase a concept with an alluring yet unique image like SISTAR’s ‘Alone.'” She added with a laugh, “All of the members have become mature now. We can pull it off well.”
“I don’t know if I can say this,” said Soobin. “I think it would also be good to do something that’s more ‘girl crush’ and of the hip hop genre. Like what you said, WJSN has shown various concepts but there’s a feeling that we’re staying in the realm of a girl [concept]. Instead of a girl, I think it’ll be better to express the image of a woman.”
WJSN celebrated their third debut anniversary on February 25. After a successful solo concert, the group is ready to take on the rest of what 2019 has to offer. Seola said, “It’s been three years, so the members have become closer and we know each other so well. So I’m looking more forward to our future promotions.”
The girl group concluded, “We’ve been busy and hard at work for the last three years. The members really worked hard for our group promotions as well as individual promotions. While doing that, we grew one step at a time without rushing, and we think we’re now just seeing those results. Of course, we still have a long way to go, but we’re trying to work hard to move forward. Please look forward to WJSN in 2019 as well.”
