Watch: Yoo Seung Ho, Hyeri, Byun Woo Seok, Kang Mina, And More Share Behind-The-Scenes Look At Script Reading For New Drama

KBS’s new historical drama, “Thinking of the Moon When the Flower Blooms” (literal translation), has released the behind-the-scenes video from their script reading!

The drama is set during the period of the strongest prohibition laws in Joseon history and shows how the complexities of human desire prove that prohibition is not the best option. It tells the story of the risky romance between a principled inspector who cracks down on those making alcohol illegally and a woman who illegally makes alcohol in order to try and turn her life around.

Yoo Seung Ho stars as Nam Young, Joseon’s greatest inspector who lives a very principled life. Hyeri stars as Kang Ro Seo, who starts making alcohol in order to pay back her debt. Byun Woo Seok co-stars as crown prince Lee Pyo, an alcoholic who falls in love, and Kang Mina co-stars as Han Ae Jin, a curious woman described as Joseon’s greatest beauty.

In the video, Yoo Seung Ho says it’s been 10 years since he returned to KBS, and introduces his character, Nam Young, as someone who rigidly sticks to the letter of the law. He comes up to Hanyang (the capital of Joseon, modern-day Seoul) from the distant provinces, but finds life in the city to be different from what he expected. When he gets entangled with Kang Ro Seo and Lee Pyo, who have completely different personalities from him, he starts to change his values and thoughts.

Hyeri introduces her character as someone who begins illegally making and selling alcohol during prohibition in order to eke out a living. She has great love for her family and would do anything for them. However, she has a playful personality and enjoys teasing the always-serious Nam Young, for instance by shouting, “It’s a ghost!” and when he takes fright, teasing, “There’s no such thing as ghosts, you know.”

Byun Woo Seok’s character, Lee Pyo, is a romantic and elegant prince who enjoys living flamboyantly. He is also a troublemaker prince who sneaks out of the palace to go drinking even during prohibition. He isn’t interested in being crown prince, and drinks to ease the secret pain he harbors in his heart.

Kang Mina captures her character Han Ae Jin’s loveliness and flirtatiousness from the first line, “He doesn’t have to be amazing. But he does have to be handsome.” Her motto is that since she has to look at the face of her husband for the rest of her life, she might as well pick a really good-looking one. She is a cherished daughter of a noble family and falls for Lee Pyo’s smooth lines. But she is also a curious person who is always seeking out new ways to have fun.

Other cast members include Bae Yoo Ram, who plays Kang Ro Seo’s brother Kang Hae Soo; Seo Ye Hwa, who plays Geum Yi; Choi Won Young, who plays Lee Shi Heum; Jang Kwang, who plays Yeon Jo Moon; Im Won Hee, who plays Hwang Ga; and Kim Ki Bang, who plays Choon Gae.

The script reading video also introduces the fact that Kang Ro Seo and Nam Young first get to know each other when he ends up staying at her house, a risky proposition when she’s also running an illegal alcohol business.
