Red Velvet’s Seulgi and Wendy got honest about the challenges of “challenge culture”!
The two Red Velvet members appeared as guests on the latest episode of GOT7’s BamBam’s show “Bam House,” where the three idols shared a meal and chatted about a variety of topics.
At one point during the episode, BamBam brought up the many dance challenges that idols typically film together while promoting their comebacks on music shows. When he asked if they had received a lot of challenge requests for their recent “Chill Kill” promotions, Seulgi replied, “You know, the culture has really changed. It’s all about challenges now.”
BamBam went on to ask, “Don’t you think it’s a little excessive sometimes?” When the Red Velvet members agreed, he continued, “It’s supposed to be fun, but it’s wound up becoming like an obligation instead.”
Wendy confessed that she sometimes felt “scared” of filming dance challenges, explaining, “I really want to do them, but I’m so afraid of not being able to do the other artist’s dance properly. I’d feel so sorry.” Seulgi elaborated, “You have to [learn the dance and film] it in such a short period of time,” and Wendy chimed in, “You have to do it fast, and there’s a limited period of time to do it.” Wendy added with a laugh, “I’m scared of challenges.”
BamBam noted, “But if you don’t film them, these days, you don’t get publicity.” Seulgi responded, “You’re right. You get the most exposure from short-form videos, so you can’t miss out on them. Because of that, you have to come up with a new direction [for promoting your song]. Instead of just dancing, what other different ways will we use to promote this song? We thought a lot about that for this [comeback]. It’s hard.”
