Variety Show Producing Director Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting Junior Colleague
Aug 15, 2019
A variety show producing director (PD) has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a female junior colleague.
On August 15, a media outlet reported that the PD (hereafter known as “A”) was sentenced on charges of quasi-rape. According to the report, the sentence was handed down at a trial at the Seoul Central District Court on August 14.
The court stated, “The victim’s testimony was detailed and there is no case for believing any of it to be false. The testimony is further backed up by the fact that in a conversation between the victim and defendant after the incident, the defendant acknowledged that he had done wrong.”
The court continued, “The nature of the crime is made worse by the fact that the victim and defendant were in a workplace relationship in which the defendant had command over her. The victim suffered years of mental anguish and difficulties in the workplace, while the defendant has given testimony that is hard to believe and has not acted like he has reflected on his actions.”
The victim (“B”) filed a criminal complaint against “A,” who had sexually assaulted her while working on the same variety program together many years before. Quasi-rape refers to sexual assault in a situation where the victim is not sound of mind or body or unable to resist.
“A” is reported to be a PD who worked for a public broadcaster (which usually refers to either KBS, SBS, or MBC) before moving to a cable channel.
