In this revenge drama, Kang In-ha is the illegitimate son of Kangoh Group who has been brought up in poverty in a single-parent household. However, when he suddenly learns of his true parentage, he quickly comes up with a plan to take what is rightly his and rise to the ranks in the Kangoh Group to take over the conglomerate. In the process, he recruits his childhood friend Han Tae-oh, a cold-hearted man whose father is a murderer.
However, his plan finds a hiccup when he meets Na Hye-won, a woman who has also seen abject poverty in her life as well and has similar dreams to him – to take over Kangoh Group for herself. Facing an unknown and unmovable challenge on their path to financial stability and power, In-ha and Tae-ho have to fight tooth and nail to realise their dreams.
Actor Lee Jae-wook was last seen in Death’s Game and Alchemy of Souls. Lee Jun-young was last seen in the highly-popular Mask Girl as well as in D.P. and Let Me Be Your Knight. Lastly, Hong Su-zu’s last roles were in Sweet Home 2 and Lovestruck in the City.
Picking up where we left off in the last episode, The Impossible Heir episode 2 starts off at Hye-won’s terrace wherein Tae-oh refuses to help her but promises not to get in her way. She tells him that he will end up helping her no matter what in the end, but he ignores her and walks off. However, he is unable to forget her and her words as he walks down the road. Back at home, he finds In-ha having ramen on his terrace. The next day, In-ha gets a call from his father, inviting him for dinner at Bisunjae on Saturday, leaving him surprised.
Tae-oh coaches In-ha to continue being in his father’s good graces after this mess is resolved while an infuriated Kang Joong-mo questions his men about everything he doesn’t know. Meanwhile, Seong-ju is left impressed by the report created by Tae-oh, which Chae Dong-uk took the credit for. That night, In-ha takes Hui-ju for dinner and she tells him that she is the one who pushed their father to invite him, leaving him a bit dazed. Either way, at the restaurant, In-ha finds Hye-won working and later invites her to a date again. When she rejects him, he asks her whether she would like him to buy as much time as she wants. The thought leaves her in deep thought.
At Bisunjae, In-ha’s entry sparks a fight between Hui-ju and Kang In-ju and Geum-seok asks In-ha to leave in the aftermath. He is left heartbroken but Tae-oh asks him to get out of his bad mood and, instead, promises to make him perfect to survive in his step family. Meanwhile, at Bisunjae, Geum-seok slaps Hui-ju for being disobedient and she runs off in anger while the Chairman is left annoyed with In-joo making In-ha leave. Hui-ju ends up calling Tae-oh to meet him and he, in turn, calls In-ha to take the girl home. Later, he gets the text that he has lost his job at Bisunjae.
The next day, Hui-ju arrives at Tae-oh’s university and expresses her feelings for him. He, of course, rejects her and, having overheard their conversation, Hye-won asks him to use Hui-ju as well. He asks her to mind her business and unknowing to her, In-ha overhears their conversation as well and questions what she is trying to achieve. After thugs try to force her to pay for her mother’s debts, both the men run to Hye-won, finally realising that they like her but Tae-oh reaches her late and finds In-ha kissing her. She notices Tae-oh as well but chooses not to say anything.
That night, Tae-oh is in disbelief at what happened in front of him and runs home but comes across Hye-won on the road. She tells him that she will be staying at In-ha’s place but he asks her to not go. Unfortunately, Hye-won refuses to stop on her path in search of a better life and walks off anyway, leaving Tae-oh standing. Back at home, he thinks about whether he will regret his choices or not and finds Hye-won knocking on his door just as In-ha calls him. In the end, he chooses to pick up his call and Hye-won walks off.
5 years later, the Co-Prosperity Cooperation Center celebrates its 5th anniversary and In-ha and everyone from the company waits for the chairman and everyone else’s arrival. Inside, it is revealed that Tae-oh is also working at the global leader training team and has written Joong-mo’s speech that day. The two men are still aligned on their goals and are just getting started!
I was almost sure that this would devolve into “two friends fighting over a girl” story with how much time we spend trying to understand which man likes Hye-won more and whom she will choose if push comes to shove, but thankfully that’s not what this is about and hopefully, we won’t get as much of Hui-ju either. I am interested to see where Hye-won’s relationship goes from here and how she changes the dynamic in the group because the two men’s plot seems to be quite linear.
