Revenant (2023) K Drama Episode 11

Jul 31, 2023

Episode 11 of Revenant starts with Hae-sang narrating how his grandmother has kept herself isolated from the world. He also explains her overreliance on Chi-won and how they used it to their advantage to trick her.

In a flashback, we see how San-yeong, Hae-sang and Hong-sae came up with the plan and recruited Chi-won to change the calendars around the house so she wouldn’t know that the safe day has arrived already. The plan worked fine and they were able to get the name of the evil spirit’s name.

By the time Byung-hee realized she had been tricked, it was too late. San-yeong warns that Hyangi will come for her soon and criticizes her for creating the evil spirit out of greed. Byung-hee has no remorse and gets angry at Chi-won for betraying her. He has her admitted to the hospital and tells her he knows she killed his son. This is payback since she betrayed him first.

Meanwhile, San-yeong texts the name of the evil spirit to Hae-sang and hurries back to the house before the clock strikes midnight. She locks herself in and puts up the Line of Probation. She is trying to protect herself and other people from the evil spirit. Hae-sang also advises Hong-sae to wait till morning to make their move.

At Hwawonjae, San-yeong tries to stay alert as the evil spirit tries to mock her and make her believe she is no different from the rest who want something from her. San-yeong loses the fight to Hyangi and a fire starts inside the locked room. San-yeong wakes up to find herself in an ambulance. She begs the paramedics to let her go, saying she’s fine and needs to get back to the house. Of course, Hyangi started the fire and called the fire station.

Lucky for them, it is already morning and it is now safe for them to make their moves. Hae-sang tries to look for the last object while Hong-sae looks into Hyangi’s records. San-yeong manages to get out of the ambulance and calls Hae-sang to warn him that Hyangi is on the move again. Through her visions, they deduce she might be going after Hong-sae.  They try to reach him but he is on another call with someone else.

Hong-sae is startled when the evil spirit knocks on his car window when he is stuck in traffic. He quickly realizes that she is not San-yeong and refuses to open the door. He manages to drive off and tries his best to ignore the constant knocking on his car.

After failing to get Hong-sae, Hyangi goes after Hae-sang while he is riding a train. Fortunately, Sany-yeong gets back to Hwawonjae in time and locks herself using the Line of Probation. Hyangi is unable to kill Hae-sang.

Hae-sang rushes to the last place related to Gang-mo and finds the last object. It is a broken hairpin wrapped in a straw rope. He calls San-yeong and informs her that he found the last object and Hyangi’s student records. Hae-sang wants San-yeong to see the last item and hold it. It is the only way they can confirm if it is real.

He meets up with Hong-sae and they drive to Hwawonjae. On the drive, Hong-sae points out that Hyangi’s body was never found. On the other hand, Hyangi shows San-yeong that she is going after Gyeong-mun. San-yeong leaves the house even though it is raining and tries to call her mom. She is unable to reach Gyeong-mun since she is on the phone with the insurance company. Gyeong-mun is surprised to learn that San-yeong took life insurance on her. She realizes something is off.

After the call, San-yeong calls again but Gyeong-mun refuses to pick up and Se-mi fails to understand what is going on. Hae-sang calls San-yeong and learns that Gyeong-mun is in danger. We circle back to the cafe and Se-mi picks up San-yeong’s call and tells her something is happening to her mom. Gyeong-mun suddenly has red marks on her wrists and is trying to hang herself. Se-mi tries to stop her but the evil spirit is too powerful.

San-yeong arrives in the middle of this commotion and threatens to kill herself if Hyangi doesn’t let her mom go. Hyangi opts to let Gyeong-mun live to see another day. By the time Hae-sang and Hong-sae arrive, San-yeong is gone. It seems that Hyangi took over her and Gyeong-mun is rushed to the hospital.  Hae-sang and Hong-sae decide to quickly do their best to get rid of the evil spirit before someone else is hurt.

Hong-sae leaves to look for San-yeong at Hwawonjae but she is not there. Instead, someone calls the house and asks to speak with San-yeong. Hong-sae takes the meeting and drives to see the man who called. . Hong-sae is surprised to see the moon paintings in the man’s house. His wife explains she was the one who drew them and that is why Gang-mo tried to contact her.

He wanted to know if she had any connection with Mokdan. By the time the lady got the message, Gang-mo was dead. The lady tells Hong-sae that she knew Mokdan’s sister, Hyangi. They were in the same art class in 1958. Back then, Hyangi tried her best at school and looking after Mokdan. She would even give the little lunch she had to Mokdan so she feels less hungry. Hyangi dreamed of being rich and being able to give her family a better life.

She felt embittered by their current situation and at times wanted everyone close to her to disappear. It turns out that Hyangi was the one chosen to die instead of Mokdan.

One night after receiving the hair ribbon, she overheard her parents talk about how she will die. Her parents felt they had no choice and sacrificed Hyangi was the only way to survive.  On the other hand, Mokdan wanted the hair ribbon because it was pretty so Hyangi gave it to her.

Mokdan was taken and Hyangi felt angry that her parents treated her as if it was her fault. Soon after, calamity struck the family and their mom killed herself. Her dad died in a ship accident and Hyangi was left all alone. Things were looking bleak and Hyangi offered herself to the shaman, begging her to take her instead of Mokdan.

Concurrently, Hae-sang meets with the old shaman who helped him before and gets some new Line of Probation. She warns him to be careful since he seems unsure just like Gang-mo and the risk of messing up the exorcism is death. She is afraid that it might be a trap since ghosts are adept at deceit. Hae-sang feels the same and knows that the evil spirit has been using them. He simply doesn’t know what Hyangi’s end goal is and is unable to figure it out.

At the hospital, Chi-won visits Byung-hee and sees she has no remorse for what she has done. He leaves her hospital door open and welcomes Hyangi into Byung-hee’s room. Byung-hee tries to beg for mercy, saying they can make a new deal and apologizes. She says that she is yet to tell Hae-sang about the other thing.

We don’t know what thing she is referring to. However, Hyangi is not moved by her proposal and tells her dead men tell no tales, therefore, she has to die. In the end, Byung-hee jumps to her death and Hyangi walks away unperturbed by the sight of Byung-hee’s bloody body lying on the ground.

Meanwhile, Hae-sang finally returns to his house and tries to find out if the last object belonged to Hyangi. He finds an old photo of Choi Manwol and recognizes the hairpin as hers. It turns out that Choi Manwol accepted Hyangi’s offer but tricked her. She didn’t set Mokdan free instead she killed Mokdan that night and proceeded to turn Hyangi into the evil spirit.

Hae-sang calls Hong-sae and asks him to meet at Byung-hee’s house. They believe Hyangi’s body is buried within the premises, particularly in the shed no one is allowed to get into. It is also the shed San-yeong saw in her visions.

They quickly start looking around the shed and find a secret door. They open it up and look around until they discover a body. As they make this discovery, San-yeong finally meets Hyangi in her true form. Hyangi acts like she has given up the fight now that they have found the five objects. She asks for one last favour: she wants San-yeong and Hae-sang to find her body and give her a decent burial beside her family. San-yeong senses that it is a trick and calls Hae-sang to warn him but it is too late.

As soon as Hong-sae picks up the hairpin found near Hyangi’s body, the shadow disappears and Hyangi takes full control of San-yeong’s body. In a flashback, we learn that Hyangi tried to stab Choi Manwol using the hairpin but failed. She was overpowered and killed by Choi Manwol but she died holding the broken piece of the hairpin in her hands.

The episode ends with Hyangi looking at the shadow and smirking before saying, “It’s over.”

The Episode Review

We are only one episode away from the finale and we’re eager to see what the change in the shadow means. Now that Hyangi has fully taken over San-yeong’s body, we can’t help but wonder where San-yeong is.

Hae-sang and Hong-sae will need to figure out things quickly before they all die at the hands of Hyangi. We are also curious to see what Hyangi will do. She must have things that she has always wanted to do if she ever fully merged her body with the host. Will she go partying before or after she tries to kill the sleuth gang?

As for Byung-hee, she got what she deserved. She started all these and it is only poetic justice she dies by her own sword. I would say rest in peace but we all know she doesn’t deserve that!
