On March 18, the Ministry of Justice’s Committee of Past Affairs accepted the extension proposal made by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Investigative Team of Past Affairs at a regular meeting held at the Gwacheon Government Complex. The committee will therefore be active until this May.
Previously, the Investigative Team of Past Affairs requested an extension for the investigation on the sexual escort services case involving former Vice-minister Kim Hak Eui of the Ministry of Justice, the late Jang Ja Yeon’s case, and the Yongsan disaster. The Yongsan disaster was an incident in which six deaths and 24 injuries were caused by a fire that resulted from a fight between the police and relocated residents of dwellings that were to be demolished.
The Committee of Past Affairs explained, “We need to organize the results of the ongoing investigations and further investigate the additional suspicions that were raised about former Vice-minister Kim Hak Eui’s case and the case regarding Jang Ja Yeon’s list. As for the Yongsan disaster, because the case was only revisited this January, [the committee needs time] to be able to undertake the necessary investigations.”
Meanwhile, Yoon Ji Oh, a former colleague of Jang Ja Yeon and a witness of her documents, is actively taking part in witness interviews and working to bring justice to her late colleague’s death.
