Recap Korean Drama "Yumi’s Cells (Season 2)" Episode 1

Episode 1 of Yumi’s Cells Season 2 starts with a brief recap of the final episode for last season. Following many ups and downs, Yumi and Woong go their separate ways and break up. Heartache remains a painful journey for our protagonist, which is explored across the run-time of this episode.

Over in Cell Land, the Mailman arrives with a Letter of Breakup to confirm this is all official. As for Love Cell, she’s been rushed into hospital and is comatose so she can’t take the letter. Instead, all the other cells run away, unwilling to take it for themselves. However, Reason warns them that if they don’t take it now, things will get worse later on down the line.

That night, Yumi tries ringing Woong. When she gets his voicemail, it’s enough for Reason to successfully hand over the letter confirming their break-up.

As for Yumi, she deletes Woong’s number and attempts to navigate through her heartache. It’s tough going, and Woong seems to have moved on, deleting the picture of them both from his profile. He’s also cut his hair too.

In order to try and help her move on, the Cells concoct a number of different remedies. Food, drink, a shopping trip and even stuff from the pharmacy too; nothing seems to work. The symptom remain, even with a 2am singing session. In fact, this brings out a new Cell, Inner Feelings.

It’s worth mentioning at this point too that Yumi updates her status to TT which is the code for a crying emoji. And interestingly, Woong sees this.

For now though, Yumi focuses on getting back to her happy, smiley self. Part of that comes from destroying anything to do with Woong. That keyboard he bought for her at work is going… but Yumi gets way too sentimental and can’t get rid of anything when the time comes.

When Yumi spots the frog hoody, it brings back all the memories from before. Specifically that of Yumi meeting Woong’s Love Cell. And of course, she ends up crying all over again.

Thankfully a knight in shining armour comes to save her. Well, figuratively speaking anyway. Bobby Yoo. He gives her a call and heads over to see her that night, handing over a work proposal. “Stay strong.” He tells her, seemingly knowing about their break-up.

The next day at work, Yumi spots Ruby flirting with Bobby. Some never never change, eh? After her antics last season, she’s now at it again but wants to know everything she can about Bobby.

Apparently Yumi knows him better than she does, prompting some investigative work. Oh, and a look at Cell Land’s numerous clubs. There’s a pretty hilarious scene here as we cut to the different Clubs, with a Lee Min-Ho fan-club and even a room for Bobby too. However, it’s empty… save for the security guard who happens to be the President!

Not for long though! Thanks to Bobby’s common interests, including ska music and reading, the exclusive group soon turns into a new love for Cell Land. In fact, Bobby invites Yumi out to go and see a ska band for that night too! He’s much more attentive to Yumi than Woong was, and the pair have a great time. In fact, Bobby says outright he thinks they should date!

The Episode Review

Yumi’s Cells is back and I am so glad this has been renewed. The second season wastes absolutely no time picking up where we left off, with a great visual flair and some nice additions to Cell Land. In fact, that opening scene with the black and white backdrop against Yumi in colour is a good way of showing how her life has dissolved around her and left her feeling cold and alone.

Meanwhile, the episode manages to inject just the right amount of humour and poignancy, with a smart number of flashbacks to show the key events from season 1. It’s already clear that Bobby is going to be a much more fun and interesting prospect compared to Woong, although I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the latter come back into the fold.

The fan-clubs in town are a neat touch too, and seeing the Lee Min-Ho stall is an amusing little Easter egg to the mega K-star. Thankfully the show has retained its same level of flair and style in this season, which is great to see.

With two episodes released at once, thankfully we don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next. Roll on the next chapter!
