One Dollar Lawyer episode 5 starts at artist Kim’s house, wherein Ji-hun, Ma-ri and Mu-jang are trying to gather evidence to defend Kim Min-jae in the gruesome murder case. While there, as Ma-ri goes around to find some evidence on her own, both of them find something rather curious out in the woods.
Ma-ri goes after this curious man with a bloody knife in his hand and is almost caught before she quickly hides. Ji-hun asks her to stay hidden where she is and goes out to meet the mysterious man on his own and finds out that it’s Min-hyeok walking around with a melting ice cream stick!

After the initial formalities, it turns out Min-hyeok and the rest of them are in the same case! It’s a night full of shenanigans as Ji-hun asks Ma-ri to spy on Min-hyeok as he continues to figure out things as they stand at the crime scene. After dropping everyone off, however, Ji-hun goes back to the house to look at something a bit deeply.
As the prosecution starts to look at the case so as to convict Min-jae, Ji-hun looks through Artist Kim’s paintings to find some sort of clue in them. However, when Ma-ri sends them a video of Su-yeon having a chat with Han Jae-sook (without sound, at that) Ji-hun starts to lip-read. Unfortunately for him, that turns out to be a dud, and Ma-ri berates them for not being able to figure anything out.
When Ji-hun looks through it again, however, it turns out that Jae-hoon was blackmailing Su-yeon for more money to keep something very shocking a secret from the police. Unfortunately, they are unable to figure out this secret and decide to talk to Su-yeon instead.
Su-yeon, on the other hand, has gone to meet Min-jae and she tells her that Jae-sook blackmailed her, saying that she will tell the police where her father is. Min-jae is confident that Jae-sook doesn’t know anything and tells Su-yeon to let her – that everything will be over soon. In a flashback, we see him holding a bloody knife as his mother lies dead on the floor and getting rid of the evidence, telling us that he might just be the actual killer here.

Ji-hun and Ma-ri meet Su-yeon, who insists on Min-jae being innocent. However, the two of them are on the fence and ask her interesting questions that make Su-yeon uncomfortable and just a bit wary of the two lawyers. After the meeting, the two of them drive to a gallery to meet the sole witness of the incident – a painting.
Ma-ri isn’t really accepting of his odd ways but goes to the gallery anyway. Unfortunately, the painting that they are after is nowhere to be found, and whoever they talk to gives them the cold shoulder. After a rather useless day, Ji-hun insists on getting the painting, which Ma-ri simply asks her mother to buy.
That night, Ma-ri and Min-a get into a heated bidding war which she eventually loses to someone who, shockingly, bids 2 billion won. Ma-ri, now annoyed, promises to find another way to get her hands on it. On the other hand, Min-hyeok and his team interrogate Min-jae, but aren’t able to crack him open. However, a break comes from a rather odd place for him, and the happiness of winning is clear on his face.

The next day, Ji-hun and the entire team try to figure out what is going on in the case because clearly, everyone is acting rather defensive and suspicious about the death. There’s definitely something that is not coming in front of them, and just as Mu-jang asks the other two to stop thinking for a bit, Ji-hun gets a parcel that, apparently, solves everything.
He found an expert to look at the painting after finding out that Chun-gil’s last painting was moved from its spot, and said expert told him that the man in the black umbrella, the artist’s signature style, was added on later while the background was painted three years ago. Thus, something must have happened to the painting for it to require retouching. And thus, the only person who could’ve done the retouching was the artist himself. Meanwhile, Min-hyeok shows Min-jae some shocking evidence.
Later on, Ji-hun and Ma-ri go on a hike down the same side road as Chun-gil to try and find out where the artist could’ve gone. Meanwhile, at the prosecutor’s office, Min-jae makes a curious request and thinks back to the events from the fated night and eventually, as a gift for letting him play the music, he tells Min-hyeok that he killed his mother.
However, Ye-jin and his other colleagues aren’t convinced – in fact, they are sure that there is more to this story than meets the eye. As Ma-ri gets the news, Ji-hun finds out where Chun-gil is hiding. He meets Min-jae later, and interestingly enough, the two of them have a rather interesting conversation wherein it comes out that Min-jae was the one who drew the man with the black umbrella, not Chun-gil, something that he got to know from Jae-sook at the crime scene right before coming to the prison.

What a delightfully busy and confusing episode. I honestly enjoyed episode 5 thoroughly – there were enough twists and turns in the narrative to keep us thinking while there was humour to pad these harsh moments. It’s a fun episode with tons of mystery, and that’s what we genuinely love to watch!
