Recap Korean Drama "One Dollar Lawyer 2022" Episode 1

One Dollar Lawyer episode 1 starts with Cheon Ji-hoon flying down the road towards a bridge where apparently a man is threatening to jump off the bridge. As first responders and onlookers try to dissuade him from doing so, Ji-hun calmly walks to the top of the bridge to talk to him.

Apparently, the man hired Ji-hun as he was being threatened by debt collectors, and in the present, the two of them get into a conversation about the man’s issues and why he wanted to kill himself. But first, he takes his 1000 won fees from him, which leaves the guy shocked.

Meanwhile, prosecutor Baek Ma-ri is trying to handle a sexual harassment case, and the guy openly flirts with the prosecutor. Na Ye-jin relieves her of her duties, and she goes off to do something else. On the other hand, Ji-hun and Sa Mu-jang go off to get paid. Unfortunately for them, there’s no one at the office, and as they wait for them, they order food.

Coincidentally, Ma-ri also gets there just in time to find the two blissfully eating and immediately gets in Ji-hun’s face, taking him to be the owner of the place. She’s later left embarrassed when she learns the truth, but Ji-hun won’t let the ruined food go that easy. They get into an argument, but not long after, the guy gets there as well.

Thanks to Ji-hun’s quick wit and Ma-ri adding incorrect information on the warrant, she is forced to leave and eventually, the lawyer is able to get the bridge guy off the ledge of debt that he owes to the debt collector.

Elsewhere, a man unfairly accuses another of trying to pickpocket him after he stumbles into him in a drunken haze. The next morning, Mu-jang escapes from their building owner after not paying their rent and picks up a case from a rather desperate-looking woman.

It’s Lee Myeong-ho’s case, the guy who is charged with burglary. He’s been charged 4 times for pickpocketing, which makes Ji-hun rather unhappy to pick this case up. However, when he learns that Myeong-ho has a 6-year-old with a heart condition, he goes off to meet her. From there they meet his wife as well, who believes that he didn’t do it. After some convincing, he does take up the case.

Meanwhile, Myeong-ho is left heartbroken at the turn his life has taken and writes a letter of apology to get leniency. Unfortunately for him, he isn’t about to get that, thanks to his repeated offences. Later on, Ji-hun meets Myeong-ho to know his side of the story.

Moved by his words, Ji-hun and Mu-jang start to gather evidence at Seoul Station and are eventually able to find the guy who accused Myeong-ho. He picks his pocket in broad daylight, but when he is taken to the police station, they let him go quite easily because of who he is.

Now driven to prove his client’s innocence, he goes to Ma-ri’s office to change Myeong-ho’s plea and to request a jury trial. As the two come face to face one more time, Ma-ri is clearly annoyed and beyond angry at the eccentric lawyer. However, there’s not much she can do about it, especially when Ji-hun tears up Myeong-ho’s apology letter in front of her.

That night, as Ma-ri tries to understand why Ji-hun is trying to complicate a simple case, she finds him sitting outside their office, going through the documents. In turn, she, too, ends up working overtime to learn everything there is to learn about the case, as well as jury selection.

After an extensive amount of learning and research, it’s the day of the trial, and Ji-hun funnily tests everyone’s patience with the questions that he ends up asking the jurors. Ma-ri, especially, is left absolutely annoyed with him but is unable to do much about it.

One Dollar Lawyer Episode 1 Ending

As the trial finally starts, the prosecution brings the witness to testify, and Ji-hun’s dedicated video gathering proves that he was drunker than he was letting on, bringing doubt in the courtroom that he might not be remembering everything correctly. However, Ma-ri isn’t far behind with her own homework, and unfortunately, it brings the jury to see her point of view.

As a last-ditch effort, Ji-hun brings in a piece of evidence as his trump card, and as he brings it up to review it, Ji-hun opens the box to show Ma-ri something so shocking that she can’t help but be left absolutely speechless.

I feel like One Dollar Lawyer is going to be a silly enemies-to-lovers show – the moment Ji-hun climbed up that bridge in a minute in the first scene, I knew that taking this show seriously would be detrimental to my mental health.

But jokes aside, One Dollar Lawyer episode 1 is an easy-breezy addition, although I couldn’t find anything that would keep me hooked to the show as of yet. Considering the K-drama took over Big Mouth’s release time on Disney+, this one comes as a real mellow dose.

Either way, it’s just the first episode, and considering that I guess it’s not the worst time one can spend. Let’s see what Ji-hun has in store for us in tomorrow’s episode.
