Recap Korean Drama "Doctor Lawyer (2022)" Episode 9

Doctor Lawyer (닥터 로이어) is a Korean law-drama TV series directed by Lee Yong-seok and stars So Ji-sub, Lim Soo-hyang and Shin Sung-rok, alongside other cast members. The series has 16 episodes and takes over MBC’s Friday-Saturday 10 PM KST timeslot previously occupied by Tomorrow. Doctor Lawyer episode 9 has a runtime of 61 minutes.

Yo-sub’s entry into Yi-han’s life again adds a sense of relief in Doctor Lawyer episode 9. Unbeknownst to him, Yo-sub might just have deeper motivations – at least that’s what the series wants us to believe at first. As Seok-yeong keeps an eye on Mi-sun, Yi-han starts the surgery. At the same time, Hyuk-chul’s trial also starts, without Yi-han.

Thanks to that hand injury earlier, unfortunately, Yi-han is having a tough time doing the surgery thanks to his arm when Yo-sub takes over for him. As a breathtaking surgery takes place, Seok-yeong pushes the trial by an hour but Hyuk-chul doesn’t look too happy about it.

Seok-yeong frantically calls Yi-han but to no avail. In the end, as the judge is about to push the trial to another day, Eun-sil proposes to represent him, shocking not only Seok-yeong and Jayden but also the judge. He gives Hyuk-chul 10 minutes to decide on what to do and in the meantime, Jayden asks Seok-yeong whether their plan really is foolproof.

As Yi-han rushes to the court with Jung-hyun in tow, Hyuk-chul is confronted with something shocking from Eun-sil to force him to change his mind. However, when the judge asks him his decision, he says he won’t change his lawyer and Yi-han gets there just in time to deliver the good news that the surgery was successful.

 

As the trial goes on and shocking things come to light, everyone is left baffled. Seok-yeong calls Jin-gi to the witness stand. After relentless questioning, Seok-yeong asks to question Hyuk-chul and Yi-han reminds him to hold up his end of the bargain. Hyuk-chul, obviously, backstabs Yi-han and acts like he’s insane halting court proceedings for the day. Unfortunately, Jin-gi goads the fact that he has one-upped Yi-han again and elsewhere, his men take Jun-hwan from him.

Seeing his plan falling through, Jayden moves to make well with Tae-moon. Meanwhile, Seok-yeong tries to play hardball with Hyuk-chul, who apologizes to her and tells her that Eun-sil threatened him with his son and he had no choice but to dance to Banseok’s tunes. I almost feel bad for Hyuk-chul and his family. Both sides of the line of fire just want to use him in one way or another. It’s just so sad.

Anyway, Seok-yeong promises to hurt Jun-hwan if Hyuk-chul doesn’t give her something worthwhile to work with while Jung-hyun promises to stay with Yi-han and gives him something interesting to work with. She tells him an interesting crime that she was a part of – Yi-han’s father didn’t commit suicide but he was forced to do so, a story that we see being corroborated by Hyuk-chul.

Shocked and fullered with more anger towards Banseok and Jin-gi, Yi-han and Seok-yeong have a lot to think about while Yo-sub must live the choices that he made that other night. Later, Yi-han thinks back to the last conversation that he had with his father where he accused him of not doing enough to prepare for the lawsuit. It’s guilt like no other and Seok-yeong also gets there to see her ex breaking down with a glass of whiskey.

The next day, they meet Jayden who proposes for them to pay back the generosity that he showed them, even though his investment fell through. The plan is to make an appearance at the board meeting organized by Banseok’s founder’s sons and to make Yoon-tae the chairman. As they get ready for the meeting, so do Jin-gi and his team.

 

Both put forth candidates that they want to be the interim director – Jayden wants Yi-han and Hyun-seong proposes himself to be the candidate. Yi-han refuses at first but when Jayden brings up the fact that it would be the perfect revenge, he gets interested in why he’s so sure that anyone would listen to him. That’s when he brings Tae-moon out, in a shocking twist.

Tae-moon asks him whether he’s the ghost doctor who took Hyun-seong’s place and when Yi-han agrees to the claim, Seok-yeong is left shocked.

I am so confused with the direction this show is taking but on the other hand, I am thoroughly invested in said direction! There’s something about Jin-gi that is so terrifying that he feels like he will destroy everything and everyone if he so wishes.

In that sense, Yi-han feels more naïve and it feels like he won’t be able to stand up to such a formidable force although you want him to with all your heart. I mean, he’s a good guy so why won’t you want him to succeed?

In spite of that, you are more interested in Jin-gi. Even though he’s not a good guy, he’s more interesting – you want to know how he thinks and why he thinks what he does. It’s so interesting.

However, we got less of Jayden in Doctor Lawyer episode 9 which makes me a bit disappointed. I need to see more of his feelings after the crushing defeat in court but somehow, his cool demeanour and immediately moving to Yu-na seem more appropriate for him.

The series has some very complicated characters and it’s a shame that Yi-han almost feels one-dimensional at this point. His one-point agenda might be novel and speak of how good he is as a person but it doesn’t add much interest to his character as a whole.
