Recap Korean Drama "Change Days Season 2" Episode 1

Jun 11, 2022

Change Days is a Korean dating reality TV series with hosts Jang Do-yeon, Code Kunst, Yang Se-chan and Heo Young-ji. Change Days season 2 episode 1 has a runtime of 78 minutes.

Change Days, streaming on Netflix, is the second iteration of the KakaoTV reality dating series. Although Netflix is terming this as, well, not the second season, we’re going to go with season 2 with the reviews so that it doesn’t become confusing.

Anyway, the series just reminds me so much of The Ultimatum that it’s almost scary. Although to be fair, that one was an absolute dumpster fire, Change Days starts off a bit better. The basic premise is surrounding 4 couples who are on the brink of burning their relationships and come to the show to find out whether they are good for each other. Now, I am always sceptical of such things – if you are unsure and unhappy with your relationship, the right choice every time is to move on and find other people. Do people normally just air their dirty laundry on air for the world to see?

Either way, the couples in Change Days season 2 Episode 1 include Lee Jeong-hun and Choi Hui-hyeon, Kim Tae-wan and Kim Hye-yeon, Choi Yun-seul and Min Hyo-gi, and Kim Do-hyeong and Kim Ji-yu. The series, interestingly, doesn’t waste a moment for the couples to do anything with each other and immediately after landing in Jeju ships them off with their prospective dates. Thus, you and the participants are all left a bit confused and overwhelmed from the first minute.

As the dates continue, you see how awkward they all feel with the situation where they have found themselves in. The dates are awkward at first with a lot of small talks, as you can imagine from blind dates. But I am thankful that all of them are not shoved into one resort where everyone dates everyone else in front of their former partners because that’s just so messy and toxic. This series has everyone going to different parts of Jeju to get on with their dates in hopes of finding an ideal match.

I think I like the awkward conversations that these people have. Most have very natural, non-sexual conversations that go as well as you can imagine. It’s cute to watch some of them just clicking and finding many similarities with each other while others struggle to say even one sentence. It’s tense, very uncomfortable and feels very real. Although, obviously, it’s glaringly obvious that there are several cameras staring at the participants and watching their every move; I, personally, didn’t find it too difficult to ignore that aspect.

The MCs this season are Jang Do-yeon, Code Kunst, Yang Se-chan and Heo Young-ji. I never thought I’d like the MCs of a reality show, but these people are absolutely delightful. They are funny and very invested and start clapping at every cute moment – it adds to the experience of the reality show.

As we follow their first date, we also see the date on which they are supposed to make their decision of staying with their original partner, or their new partner or simply leaving the show alone. It adds to the stress and excitement of the viewers – you look at their first date and try to gauge what their reaction will be after they spend time with each other. The first episode features the first dates and a meeting of all the participants afterwards. As most of their dates go well barring one, you just wait for the awkwardness to burst open on the dinner table.

And boy, does it burst open! There’s obviously jealousy all around and some of the participants just act like such sore losers that it’s almost painful to watch this happen on-screen. But, it’s oh-so deliciously gossipy. It’s interesting to note that, even when they all get together, it’s a hundred times more respectful (and funny, thanks to the MCs) than The Ultimatum. Let’s all remember the dumpster fire that was the first couples-meet with the Lachey’s!

Change Days season 2 episode 1 is delightful and entertaining throughout its 78-minute runtime. There are several cute moments and some very awkward moments around the dinner table that might put you off of blind dates forever. It’s the perfect reality TV to get into if you want some spice in your life without the added cringy bits.
