The staff at Billboard have revealed their picks for the 100 best songs of 2023!
On December 7 local time, Billboard published its staff-curated year-end list of “The 100 Best Songs of 2023,” a roundup that spans many different genres.
NewJeans’ “Super Shy” made the list at No. 38, with Andrew Unterberger writing, “NewJeans arrived on the global scene this year seemingly already fully formed, already looking and sounding like pop superstars. But even for them, ‘Super Shy’ was a cut above, a song that integrated cutting-edge production elements from all over the globe for an unrequited-crush song with songwriting and performance strong enough to work nearly as well unplugged.”
Meanwhile, FIFTY FIFTY’s viral hit “Cupid” ranked No. 50. Unterberger wrote, “One of the most delirious pop songs of 2023, the breakout single for girl group FIFTY FIFTY was so irresistible that it became the first top 10 hit on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart for a South Korean group not named BTS. Not hard to see why: ‘Cupid’ mixes disco, pop and rap more effortlessly than any song since ‘Say So,’ with irrepressible energy, a five-star chorus and—could it be?—yes, even a late-song key change.”
Finally, BTS’s Jungkook’s official solo debut single “Seven” (featuring Latto) took No. 55 on the list. Katie Atkinson wrote, “Jungkook plays a very persistent paramour in this smash hit—the BTS crooner’s first solo Hot 100 No. 1. And just like the extremely eager lyrics, the song will win over even the most resistant pop fan in the end, thanks to its U.K. garage-influenced beat, adults-only sing-along chorus, and raucously randy guest verse from a lustful Latto. We’ve had this one on repeat 24/7 ever since the ‘GOLDEN’ lead single dropped.”
Congratulations to NewJeans, FIFTY FIFTY, and Jungkook!
