Monday-Tuesday dramas on KBS2 facing possible suspension

KBS2 is now reviewing a plan to suspend the broadcast of prime time Korean dramas on its Monday-Tuesday time slot, a source from the TV network revealed on August 2.

This after a report earlier claimed that KBS2 will not broadcast Monday-Tuesday dramas during the next winter season, from December 2019 to February 2020. The supposedly last series to be broadcast before the temporary shutdown is Mung Bean Chronicles starring Kim So-hyun and Jang Dong-yoon.

Although KBS2 clarified that it is still considering the plan, the approval of such plan may come as no surprise. After all, its rival networks SBS and MBC already made the same move, which may be needed to respond to the changing consumption patterns of local viewers.

SBS and MBC announced in May that they would suspend their decades-old Monday-Tuesday drama programming, which normally airs between 9:50 and 11:10 P.M. Korean Standard Time (KST). This time slot and a similar one on Wednesday and Thursday are the weekday prime time drama schedule of the three major broadcasters in South Korea.

SBS already implemented the change, with its Monday-Tuesday drama slot now occupied by a variety show since the conclusion of The Life Of My Secretary on June 25. Similarly, MBC is set to air a different type of program after the finale of Welcome 2 Life, which will premiere on August 5. On top of that, it had moved the broadcast time of its weekday prime time dramas an hour earlier from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. KST.

Meanwhile, I Wanna Hear Your Song is KBS2’s latest Monday-Tuesday drama that will premiere on August 5. When the series concludes in the last week of September, it will be followed by Mung Bean Chronicles, which may become the last Monday-Tuesday KBS2 drama in 2019 if the network pushes its plan through.

It remains to be seen whether MBC and SBS will resume broadcasting Monday-Tuesday dramas some time in the future.
