K-pop divas Taeyeon and IU have warmed the hearts of many by making donations to needy people.
Taeyeon, leader of girl group Girls' Generation, recently contributed 100 million won ($83,000) to provide health and hygiene items for disadvantaged teenage girls.
The singer also joined the Red Cross Honors Club (RCHC), which includes individual donors who have given more than 100 million won. She is reportedly the club's 132nd member.
On Wednesday, she participated in the initiation ceremony at the head office of the Korean Red Cross in Seoul, according to the organization.
"I hope my contribution can be used in a meaningful way," she said during the ceremony. "I decided to donate to appreciate my fans."
Taeyeon, who debuted in 2007 as a member of Girls' Generation, released "All About You" the ― the soundtrack for tvN's ongoing drama "Hotel Del Luna" ― in July and reigned atop music charts.
Singer-actress IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, contributed 10 million won ($8,300) for seniors living alone, according to a newsletter published by Seoul's Seocho-gu.
"We handed the elderly 100 summer blankets, thanks to IU's donation," the newsletter said.
IU initially considered supplying electric fans but later decided to provide blankets, which were more in demand, reports said.
She also has been donating to dozens of other organizations including ChildFund Korea. In April, she supported victims of the massive wildfire in Gangwon Province with 100 million won.
IU, who has a string of smash-hit songs including "Good Day" (2010), is starring in "Hotel Del Luna."
