Korean actors are taking on major roles in Hollywood films.
This year, Korean actors played leads in Hollywood films such as John Cho in “Search,” Claudia Kim in “Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald,” and Jihae in “Mortal Engines.”
“Mortal Engines” is a fantasy action blockbuster where Earth gets destroyed after a 60-minute war. It tells the story of the war between moving cities with the survival of mankind at stake. It’s produced by Peter Jackson, whose popular works include “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” series.
Singer-songwriter and actress Jihae is a cast member in “Mortal Engines.” She was born in Seoul and has lived in many countries including Nigeria, Sweden, and the United States because her father was a diplomat. She’s currently an artist based in New York.
As a singer-songwriter, Jihae has released four albums and has worked with musicians such as Michel Gondry, Lenny Kravitz, David Stewart, and Leonard Cohen. She has worked in the fine arts, modeled, and began acting after appearing in National Geographic’s six-part documentary fiction drama “Mars.”
Following her belief that actors should express themselves as creators, Jihae chose to appear in the film “Mortal Engines” after liking the film’s unique perspective on humanity remaining in the post-apocalyptic world.
Jihae appears as the most powerful warrior that takes on the city of London which is destroying all other cities. The importance of her role can be seen in the ending credits, where her name is the fourth to appear after Hera Hilmer, Robert Sheehan, and Hugo Weaving.
As a warrior, the actress will show various action scenes using weapons like guns and knives. In an interview, director Christian Rivers said, “Many great female characters appear in ‘Mortal Engines.'”
“Mortal Engines” is a globally popular sci-fi book series and is a fantasy action blockbuster that will premiere after two years of production. Director Peter Jackson has received the Academy Award for Best Special Effects for “King Kong” and director Christian Rivers, who is known for revolutionary visual effects, will bring the book to the big screen. The film is scheduled to premiere on December 5 in Korea.
“Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second film in its series. It takes place in Paris and tells the story of a magical battle with the world’s future at stake. Claudia Kim will portray Nagini, a character who has the curse of transforming into a snake, and appear alongside Ezra Miller. This will be Claudia Kim’s second major global film after “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
After movies like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Search” premiered this year, many people are wondering if interest in and the status of Korean actors will increase globally thanks to actresses like Jihae and Claudia Kim.
