Jeon Do Yeon Shares Thoughts About Her Upcoming Film On The Sewol Ferry Disaster
Mar 28, 2019
On March 26, Jeon Do Yeon was interviewed at a cafe in Jongro Province, Seoul regarding her upcoming movie “Birthday” (literal title). The movie tells the story of those left behind after the death of the main character’s son, who died on April 16, 2014, the date of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
When asked whether she is burdened by the high expectations people have of Jeon Do Yeon as an actress, she responded, “I think it’s a good thing that people look forward to my acting.” Jeon Do Yeon added, “Even though there may be some pressure that comes with expectations, I want to receive as much as I can, whatever pressure it may be and however much it may be. I feel more pressure about the expectations people have of me as a person rather than the expectations they have of me as an actress.”
She continued, “When I decided to film this movie, I was worried that the sensitive topic of the Sewol Ferry disaster would add to my serious image. The serious image I have as an actress may be because I am a serious person or because I’ve been taking on serious films or stories that most people don’t want to talk about. But if this is all part of the expectations you are talking about, then I am grateful [for it].”
Jeon Do Yeon revealed that taking part in the film was not an easy decision to make, saying, “I was most worried that the movie may be hard to approach because the Sewol Ferry disaster is a sensitive and delicate subject matter. Those around me also agreed, but after watching the movie, I think it is a film that everyone should watch.”
She remarked, “Rather than it being someone’s personal story, I think this story tells the narrative of us all. For those who have not watched these types of films, it might make you look at the world from a different perspective. I am actively promoting this movie because I really hope people interpret the movie the way I see it.”
“Birthday” will be released on April 3.
