Rookie K-pop girl groups made a strong showing on NME’s list of “The Best Albums of 2023… So Far”!
This week, the British publication unveiled its midyear roundup of its picks for the 20 best albums of the year thus far, which span a wide variety of genres. IVE and LE SSERAFIM, neither of whom have yet reached the second anniversary of their debut, both graced the list with their first full-length albums.
IVE’s first studio album “I’ve IVE,” which NME praised as “a luxurious, confident, and commanding collection of K-pop,” was one of only 20 albums to make the midyear list. Tássia Assis enthused, “They showcase 11 solid tracks that are cohesive beyond their years. Ranging from the mystifying strings of opener ‘Blue Blood,’ to the airy progressions of ‘Mine,’ and then to the ’90s R&B vocal delight of ‘Cherish,’ they don’t miss a single beat.”
LE SSERAFIM, whom NME described as a “K-pop girl group at the forefront of the scene’s fourth generation,” also made the list with their own first full-length album “UNFORGIVEN.” Highlighting the bold lyrics to the album’s title track, Gladys Yeo wrote, “While previous title tracks ‘FEARLESS‘ and ‘ANTIFRAGILE‘ had been all about showing their strength, the Western-inspired ‘UNFORGIVEN‘ speaks to their unflinching determination never to compromise their values.”
Also on the list was Korean-American producer and DJ Yaeji’s “With A Hammer,” which NME praised by writing, “Thorny and tangled, this is dance music for drifting home from the club on deserted pavements; the moment of reflection after the euphoria fades.”
Congratulations to all the artists that made the list!
