Actress Gong Hyo-jin, and actor Kim Rae-won are back together as an on-screen couple with a new film "The Most Ordinary Romance," which will be released in October. This is their first film together in 16 years.

At the press conference held on Thursday at CGV Apgujeong in southern Seoul, starring actors and director Kim Han-gyeol joined to talk about the film and their thoughts on romance.

The story revolves around two people who meet just after the end of their respective relationships. Jae-hoon is the male lead, played by Kim, who is reluctant to let go of his ex-girlfriend and Sun-young is the female lead betrayed by her ex-boyfriend and is left feeling cynical about love.

Gong said she liked the film because it told the story from both sides.

"My mind was very busy at the time I received the script. The film had to be completed quickly in winter. But I found the story very interesting. There is a fair amount of stories from both man and woman and what they have to say from their point of view. Each had their own strong opinions regardless of gender," she said.

"I also never expected the director would be female; I was really glad to see the female director. We thought the film is somehow based on her own story, because it is impossible to get this realistic without it being true. There is no fantasy or beautifying the relationship, which makes it go deep into the subject," Gong added.

The director also showed deep affection for the actors. "I was so glad when the casting was confirmed. I was really grateful they acted with passion, and thought they were really great people when I saw them taking care of the details," she said.

Gong Hyo-jin and Kim Rae-won discussed their experience working together again. "I had high expectations because it has been a long time since Gong and I worked together. Of course, shooting the film was also fun," remarked Kim. Gong was also happy to be reunited with Kim on screen, "Kim and I were baby actors when we shot the drama 'Snowman' 16 years ago. I have been telling people that I really wanted to do work with him again," she said.

On the subject of what is a "most ordinary romance," Kim Rae-won said: "I still don't know what it is. I think romance just comes and goes. The most ordinary romance would be a continuous cycle of people falling apart and getting back together."

Gong said the most ordinary romance is showing a partner your true self.  "I think people are addicted to looking good in front of other people. Jae-ho and Sun-young in the film reveal their wounds from the start without hiding it," Gong said. "I think the most ordinary romance is showing your partner the way you are and leaving behind the things that we cannot understand," she said.
