MBC’s upcoming drama “Chief Detective 1958” has revealed a glimpse of Choi Bool Am’s highly-anticipated cameo!
“Chief Detective 1958” is a brand-new prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.
Lee Je Hoon will be playing a younger version of the titular chief detective Park Young Han, who was played by Choi Bool Am in the original series.
The upcoming first episode of the drama will feature the return of a legend: Choi Bool Am will be making a special appearance in the premiere as an elderly version of Park Young Han, who is now old, experienced, and full of hard-earned wisdom.
Director Kim Sung Hoon described Choi Bool Am’s cameo as “inevitable,” explaining, “Because Choi Bool Am is essentially Detective Park Young Han of ‘Chief Inspector,’ I thought that an appearance by him was inevitable. By showing the elderly version of Park Young Han, who might seem ordinary on the outside, I wanted to say, ‘Okay, look carefully from now on. I’ll show you how extraordinary this seemingly ordinary person was.’ And to those who remember the original ‘Chief Inspector,’ I wanted to say, ‘Everyone, the true chief inspector is back.’”
As for his experience working with Choi Bool Am, the director recalled, “Although it was brief, he discussed each and every line of his dialogue with me, and he found meaning in each line. He also shared a lot of opinions about the costumes, props, and set, and he did his utmost in every single scene.”
“The focus and passion he showed on set really touched the hearts of many staff members,” Kim Sung Hoon continued. “I myself felt really proud and honored just to have been able to work with Choi Bool Am, even briefly.”
“Chief Detective 1958” will premiere on April 19 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
