Cha Seung Won, Kim Kang Woo, And Kim Seon Ho Talk About "The Tyrant" And Admiration For Each Other

Aug 22, 2024

The cast of “The Tyrant”—Cha Seung Won, Kim Kang Woo, and Kim Seon Ho—have graced Harper’s Bazaar Korea with a stunning pictorial!

In an interview that followed the photo shoot, Cha Seung Won talked about his character Im Sang, a former agent and killer. He said, “He has a meticulous yet foolish side in daily life, but when he is on a mission, he becomes like a blunt weapon that cuts sharply. In the scene where he clashes with high school students, he appears particularly clumsy, but that was the approach I suggested to director Park Hoon Jung to highlight the contrast with his mission-focused demeanor.”

He then teased the series, saying, “I was quite impressed by the dialogue between Director Choi with a twisted mind and Paul, who is into the concept of ‘sadaejuui.’ Personally, the scenes that touch on national sovereignty and the accompanying lines were particularly impactful for me.”

Kim Kang Woo, who plays the fearless chaser Paul, shared his admiration for the drama, remarking, “Hong Kong movies like ‘A Better Tomorrow’ still make my heart race. I could feel a reckless confidence through the scenes created by characters who face off with a willingness to die, driven by their pride, confidence, and adrenaline. ‘The Tyrant’ is no different. It’s rare to encounter a drama with such unique and distinct characters.”

He also praised Kim Seon Ho, with whom he reunited after last year’s ‘The Childe,’ saying, “I was impressed by Seon Ho’s portrayal of Director Choi’s loneliness. Watching the rough cut, I was impressed by how Seon Ho is mature enough to embody both masculinity and solitude.”

Kim Seon Ho, who portrays Director Choi, shared a scene that is memorable for him. He said, “Director Choi’s characteristics are revealed in the scene where he’s having a toast and engaging in a strategic confrontation. It’s when he reveals his true intentions for the first time, after concealing his secret project throughout. I played this moment as slyly as possible to make it more dramatic.”

When asked about what he learned from Cha Seung Won and Kim Kang Woo, he said, “I want to emulate Kim Kang Woo’s sharpness. I remember crying while watching ‘My Teacher, Mr. Kim’ when I was a student. Cha Seung Won excels in ordinary roles with such ease and flexibility. I have always wanted to emulate him for these qualities.”
