[C-Drama]: Shen Yue's Crying Scene in Another Me Garners Negative Comments

Jul 29, 2019

It seems like I'm seeing Shen Yue's name quite a lot lately from her red carpets looks being criticized to her controversial pairing with Jerry Yan. People have now turned their attention to her acting. Another Me has just started airing this week, and one particular crying scene has been singled out.

In the said scene, An Sheng, played by Shen Yue, grieves the death of her mother and regrets not seeing her mother for one last time. She doesn't immediately betray emotion upon hearing the news though gradually, her face contorts in anguish as she talks to a picture of her mother to release her pent up feelings. She paces the room back and forth, throws a vase, before breaking down in tears.

It's the kind of scene that will make you sob loudly while blowing your nose. However, it seems that those raw emotions weren't so convincing for some netizens who have expressed disappointment towards her acting. And to be honest, I'm not surprised.

Her performance wasn't really her best and a bit, er, awkward. Some of her cries were also a little off and I ended up cringing? At the start of the scene, when she's tearing up, her voice lacked the usual break that I'm used to hearing. To her credit though, Shen Yue's facial expression were good at some points.

It does feel like Shen Yue can get unwarranted hate over every little thing. Another Me's movie version Soul Mate earned both Zhou Dongyu and Sandra Ma the best actress award. That's an insanely high bar for the drama adaptation which doesn't help. While I do find Shen Yue to be a good actress, I agree with netizens in saying that she could have done better.
