The Broadway musical “KPOP” has scored multiple nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards!
On May 2 local time, the 76th annual Tony Awards officially announced this year’s nominees, and “KPOP” snagged no less than three nods. The show has been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design of a Musical.
As “KPOP” made songwriter Helen Park the first Asian female composer for a Broadway musical in history, the show’s nomination for Best Original Score is particularly meaningful—and puts her in the running to become the first Asian female ever to win the award (alongside co-composer Max Vernon).
“KPOP,” which ran on Broadway from November to December 2022 after enjoying a successful off-Broadway run in 2017, is an original musical about fictional K-pop stars gearing up to make their U.S. debut. The Broadway production starred a number of real-life K-pop idols, including f(x)’s Luna, miss A’s Min, U-KISS’s Kevin Woo, and SPICA’s Kim Bohyung.
The 2023 Tony Awards will be held on June 11 in New York.
