Only four episodes left of “The One and Only,” and the tension continues to build!
“The One and Only” is a unique romance drama starring Ahn Eun Jin, Red Velvet’s Joy, and Kang Ye Won as three terminally ill women who meet at a hospice. They decide that before they die, they want to take down one bad guy before they go—and in their attempt to do so, Pyo In Sook (Ahn Eun Jin) winds up meeting “the one and only” most valuable person of her life.
As the show winds down, the cast of “The One and Only” look back on the previous episodes and chose some of their favorite moments that have happened in the show.
Throughout her life, Pyo In Sook never got to enjoy the ordinary joys that most people do. During cherry blossom season, people flock together to take pictures, smile, and enjoy an exciting spring day, but Pyo In Sook was always sitting on a bench alone. However, when Min Woo Chun (Kim Kyung Nam) came into her messy life, he presented her with those ordinary joys. For the first time in her life, they strolled down the street, exchanged small talk, played games at an arcade, blew out the candles on a birthday cake at a cafe, and enjoyed relaxing moments together. Because it was ordinary, her date with Min Woo Chun was even more special, and it became deeply embedded in Ahn Eun Jin’s heart.
“This was the happiest day for In Sook, to the point where she thought, ‘Now I’ve achieved everything and can go happily,'” said Ahn Eun Jin. “I’m really glad In Sook was able to have that day in her life.”
Kim Kyung Nam picked his ‘ending kiss’ with Ahn Eun Jin as one of the drama’s best scenes. “It was more memorable because it was an unexpected kiss in the middle of a hospice lobby watched by many people,” he explained.
Pyo In Sook has poor hearing due to an accident that occurred when she was young. Therefore, without knowing police lieutenant Jo Si Young (Do Sang Woo) was approaching, she tried to say she was the culprit behind the murder of Ha Yong Geun (Baek Hyun Jin), and to stop her, Min Woo Chun locked lips with Pyo In Sook. He had visited the hospital on orders from his boss Shin Tae Il (Ahn Chang Hwan), but his feelings became complicated from the moment he saw Pyo In Sook. As Kim Kyung Nam said, “From this point on, it slowly became a romance drama.”
If the romance between Pyo In Sook and Min Woo Chun captures love and longing, the the “wo-mance” between Pyo In Sook, Kang Se Yeon (Kang Ye Won), and Sung Mi Do (Joy) leaves a touching and lingering impression. Especially in Episode 11, Kang Se Yeon and Sung Mi Do did everything they could to help Pyo In Sook and Min Woo Chun escape to be together, even if they did not have much time left.
“The most memorable scene is when Mi Do [and Se Yeon] help In Sook and Woo Cheon escape by car, and they wish each other happiness while parting ways,” said Kang Ye Won. Since all three characters had a time limit and didn’t know when or how they would die, the promise of meeting again, but not knowing when, made it even sadder.
Kang Ye Won added, “It’s a very memorable and heartbreaking scene because the three characters have built up emotions and their current situations have become intertwined from the time they arrived at the hospice until now.”
Joy remarked, “A scene that left a strong impression on me was the one where Mi Do suggests to In Sook that they hide the phone, which later becomes a decisive piece of evidence, and is happy that she has someone on her side for the first time. It gave viewers a small glimpse of the kind of environment Mi Do had lived in up until then.” While people often approached Mi Do because of her glamorous and pretty appearance, they always got tired of her quickly and then left. Her parents also hated her, saying her brother died because of her. Mi Do could not cry or laugh in front of her family, the people whom she should feel the most comfortable with.
So when Mi Do, who had gone through her life so lonely and longing for love and attention, teamed up with In Sook and Se Yeon, she finally had someone on her side. In order to protect a child, they had to take out a bad guy, and three people became one. It was the first moment that someone who hadn’t been able to belong anywhere finally became part of an “us.”
“The One and Only” airs every Monday and Tuesday at 11 p.m. KST.
