The cast and crew of “Military Prosecutor Doberman” shared details about the upcoming drama at their press conference!
On February 23, tvN held an online press conference for their new drama “Military Prosecutor Doberman.” Present at the event were main cast members Ahn Bo Hyun, Jo Bo Ah, Oh Yeon Soo, Kim Young Min, and Kim Woo Seok, as well as director Jin Chang Gyu.
“Military Prosecutor Doberman” is about two military prosecutors who chose the job for very different reasons—but who wind up coming together to fight evil in the military. Ahn Bo Hyun will star as Do Bae Man, an indifferent prosecutor who only took the job for money, while Jo Bo Ah stars as chaebol heiress Cha Woo In, who became a military prosecutor for revenge.
Oh Yeon Soo plays Noh Hwa Young, the first female division leader since the military’s establishment. Kim Woo Seok portrays her son Noh Tae Nam, a third-generation chaebol who becomes the chairman of a leading conglomerate despite only being in his late 20s. Kim Young Min plays lawyer Yong Moon Goo, the director of Korea’s leading law firm and a former special forces prosecutor.
Director Jin Chang Gyu explained that the drama centers on the interesting premise of military court, which hasn’t been tackled before by Korean dramas. He added, “You might think it’s going to be heavy because it’s a court drama, but our efforts to make the drama with the lightest atmosphere possible is what sets it apart from other court-of-law dramas. You’ll also be able to see a different tone of acting from all five actors compared to what they’ve shown before, so it’ll be fun to watch.”
On choosing this drama, Ahn Bo Hyun commented, “When I first received the offer for this drama, the script was so much fun that I read Parts 1 through 4 in one sitting. I had a lot of worries about whether I’d be able to do a court drama, but in addition to the never-before-seen plot, I could feel the exhilaration through the words, so I really wanted to try acting in it. I’m filming diligently while thinking of this as a challenge.”
Jo Bo Ah shared, “The writer’s incredible writing laid out the foundation, and all my [acting] seniors became the pillars. I also wanted to work on a project with Ahn Bo Hyun. I’ve previously worked with the director on ‘Monster,’ so I’m filming especially happily now that we’ve met again.”
Oh Yeon Soo explained that she initially didn’t know much about the military and added, “I learned through this project that issues within the military are not dealt with by an external court. Since this is a boundary-crossing psychopath role, I wondered, ‘Will I be able to do a good job?’ But since it’s such an appealing character, I really wanted to do it. I’ve been brainstorming and researching while filming.”
Kim Young Min commented, “I had faith in the writer and director. The script wasn’t heavy and felt light. There were also a few refreshing scenes in the middle, so I enjoyed reading [the script]. I’d wanted to work with Ahn Bo Hyun again, so it was nice to see him, and I’m a fan of Oh Yeon Soo, so I really wanted to meet her. I was also curious about my chemistry with the other actors. We’re currently filming in good spirits on set.”
Kim Woo Seok shared, “This is a drama with many exhilarating scenes that give you a vicarious thrill. I really wanted to play the character of Noh Tae Nam because he’s so different from my real-life self. I worked hard at my audition. I’ve been working diligently while thinking about how thankful I am just to be able to work on this with everyone.”
Director Jin Chang Gyu spoke more about the casting process as he explained, “As soon as Oh Yeon Soo received the script, I had my eye on her for the role, and I told her I really wanted to do this with her. I was thankful that she readily agreed. Also, when someone said ‘doberman,’ I thought of Ahn Bo Hyun first. I remember insisting that Ahn Bo Hyun had to do it because he resembles dobermans a lot.”
He continued, “Since Jo Bo Ah has such a lovely and pretty image, I cast her because I was curious about how she’d showcase a completely opposite vibe. Kim Young Min is an actor I’ve really wanted to work with. During his audition, Kim Woo Seok was picked as No. 1. It’s an honor to work with him. I hope our actors can create impressive careers with this project.”
The director also elaborated on what makes this drama unique, sharing, “I don’t think there are a lot of people who know that there’s a military court in the court of law. They say there aren’t too many countries around the world with it. While it’s court, what’s most different is that they get tangled in terms of their rankings. I think the conflict that arises from that will be fun. They also say that a ruling can be overturned if the Commander-in-Chief makes an order. A dilemma of the military court is whether law or ranking comes first, and we worked to convey those aspects.”
tvN’s “Military Prosecutor Doberman” premieres on February 28 at 10:30 p.m. KST and will be available on DramaCool.
