NewJeans’s agency ADOR has addressed recent plagiarism allegations concerning their song “Bubble Gum.”
Earlier today, a media report revealed that Wise Music Group sent an official Letter of Claim in mid-June to ADOR, its parent company HYBE, the Korea Music Copyright Association, and Sony Music Publishing Hong Kong Limited (Korea) among others.
According to a domestic law firm representing the British band Shakatak, they stated, “The song ‘Bubble Gum,’ recorded by NewJeans and currently in use, infringes on copyright by incorporating ‘Easier Said Than Done’ without permission. We have verified this and requested swift action, including ceasing the use of ‘Bubble Gum.'”
The firm also requested a review of several issues, including halting use, reporting profits, changing the rights holder, providing a written guarantee, and compensating for damages. ADOR was urged to take necessary actions to confirm compliance and inform Wise Music Group directly within the specified seven-day deadline.
In response, ADOR released the following statement:
1. On June 17, Shakatak’s legal team provided proof of their claims, and ADOR’s legal team responded promptly on June 21.
2. ADOR’s response stated: “‘Bubble Gum’ has not used Shakatak’s compositions without permission. We request a credible analysis report on this matter.”
3. On June 21, Shakatak indicated they would provide the report soon, but it has yet to be received.
4. The party raising the issue is required to submit a report proving plagiarism, and Shakatak must respond accordingly.
