We might be reaching the end of “Cinderella at 2AM” but the game is still on between ex-lovers Ha Yun Seo (Shin Hyun Been) and Seo Ju Won (Moon Sang Min). This drama keeps you glued to the screen with its mix of fairytale-like and strikingly realistic scenes, and while he has his mind set on getting back together, she is still determined to break up and leave his side forever. But both cases are easier said than done, and only time will tell if they’ll be able to get their happy ending or not, which takes us this week to these big bittersweet moments in the latest episodes.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 7-8 ahead!
To start this week’s episodes, we get yet again a very cutesy Seo Ju Won trying to regain the love of Ha Yun Seo – though he never lost it for real – with a new infallible strategy: to make her believe he is moving on. At first, we see it working when he makes her long for their sweet time together while celebrating her birthday. Even when she never put so much meaning into celebrating it, comparing her time with Ju Won and her current situation, it is clear that she feels lonelier than ever. Having to let go of the person who was sincerely happy for your existence in the world must be hard for anybody, even for a strong-minded woman like Yun Seo.
However, despite her wishes, this Cinderella cannot celebrate her birthday in any way when she finds out her mother has passed away. We see that their relationship was nothing like one between a mother and daughter, so it’s no wonder that neither she nor her brother feel pity about the loss. Nonetheless, the cluster of emotions she has at this point is too much for her to hold it together any longer. As much as she tries to be strong and independent, she is only a woman who had to endure so much violence and neglect from her own parents, and now she has to walk away from the person she loves. It is no wonder that the moment she sees Ju Won in front of her at the funeral parlor that she finally breaks down in his arms.
All games and tricks aside, once Yun Seo’s feelings are out in the light, Ju Won can’t help but feel amazed by her resilience and strength. Given his upbringing, he can barely fathom what her struggles were like, but that only makes his admiration for her grow fonder. His heart, always set on his love for her and also on his wish to be someone who could help, support, and encourage her through all ups and downs, leads him to propose to her. Though it might look like a sprout of the moment, he admits that the idea of sharing their lives has always been in his mind.
But despite the sweetness and sincerity of Ju Won’s proposal, neither of them can ignore that marriage involves many more things than just their feelings. After all, Ju Won is still part of a wealthy and influential family, and Yun Seo doesn’t have a perfect background. Besides, we cannot forget that Ju Won’s mother still firmly opposes their relationship, and although she isn’t the typical mother-in-law who harasses the female lead day and night, that doesn’t stop her from intervening in her children’s lives.
While Seo Si Won (Yoon Park) tries to maintain a cool and distant image in front of his wife, Lee Mi Jin (Park So Jin), she can’t help but notice his adorable side. Since their marriage didn’t start as a normal one or out of love, it’s only natural that they will encounter moments of conflict or disappointment. When Mi Jin uploads a picture of him without his consent, for example, it triggers his memories of when he posted a drunk picture, one of his most embarrassing moments and something he still has to pay for.
Luckily, they resolve the problem right away, without leaving too much space for misunderstandings, and they even end up working together to promote their lifestyle. Something that other K-drama couples could learn from them is that communication works wonders. Maybe because their feelings aren’t too deep just yet, or perhaps because their relationship began as a mutual understanding, their dynamic works really well. Hopefully, this couple will continue giving us all the butterflies with their cute yet clumsy antics.
Although Ha Yun Seo has wished to follow her heart on more than one occasion, her mind has always dictated most of her decisions. However, the moment of truth comes when Ju Won has to go abroad, pressured by his mother once again. And the thought of losing him for good so unexpectedly strikes right in her heart. Just like in the best old romantic comedies, she gathers her courage and goes after him to the airport where she confesses to Ju Won, and they get back together.
But their sweet reconciliation is cut short because he indeed has to go abroad, though only for a business trip. Despite not wanting to be one more day apart, they have to wait a little longer because of circumstances like a misunderstanding between their colleagues or emergency meetings at their work, clouding for a moment their happiness. Fortunately, at the end of the day, they can be together and spend a well-deserved moment of romance between them. Hopefully, they will be able to keep this blissful feeling until the very end of this K-drama next week!
